Hi! I'm the person who posted something about wanting a ''dread wolf'' tattoo in runes! thank you SO MUCH for your answer, it's really kind of you to have taken time to help me! I've looked into the site you recommended and I like the different versions of every rune, but I can only seem to find elder futhark runes. I was wondering if old norse isnt suitable for elder futhark runes, which language would be? (I've tried to research it beforehand, I wouldn't ask otherwise!)
Iām always happy to help, and you can feel free to ask any other questions that might come up.
The elder futhark was used to write languages that would mostly fall under the heading of āProto-North Germanicā (Or āProto-Norseā) or āProto-West Germanicā (the ancestor of Old English, Old High German, etc). You might notice that some Old Norse vowels canāt be written in elder futhark, like y, æ, Ćø, and Ē« ā thatās because they actually didnāt exist yet.
Other than runic inscriptions, these languages were not written and are reconstructed by comparing the languages that developed from them, as well as those little bits that we do have written down, and to their ācousinā languages like Latin, Sanskrit, or Lithuanian. So for example, the word that later developed into English wolf, Old Norse Ćŗlfr, German Wolf, etc was *wulfaz, and would have looked like this:
Now *wulfazĀ is pretty easy to piece back together ā partially because it actually was written in runes (albeit a little late). But óttiĀ is tough. There are a couple different things it could have come from, and I wouldnāt really feel comfortable making a suggestion as to how to write that one in elder runes.
On the site I recommended, it lists runic inscriptions by location, and sometimes subdivides by date. So for example to find Viking-age inscriptions from Norway, you go to āNorske runeinnskrifter II." Itās in Norwegian so you wonāt be able to read much, but anywhere that there is a link with the word "Bilde(t)" (āpictureā) you can see a photograph of the actual inscription and compare it to the text. For example:
