Understanding the Old Testament
As a Christian, it is important to keep the Old Testament for principal purposes. Christian is a New Covenant keeping people. We use the Old Testament to teach people about how people obey God before Christ, Understanding the Law of Moses, and Prophecy Fulfillment. You don’t have to keep the Old Testament law because Jesus already fulfilled and we walk in the Spirit. When you fear God, you will obey God.
What does “not under the law, but under grace” really mean?
There are many Christians who believe that since we are not under the law but under grace that we do not have to follow the commandments of Yehovah written in the Torah(first 5 books of the old testament). Yeshua(Jesus) clearly said in Matthew 7:12 that “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil”. Also, in Romans 3:31, Paul says “Do we, then, nullify the Law by this faith? Certainly not! Instead, we uphold the Law.” So why does Paul say in Romans 6:14 that “For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.” When Paul said that we are not under the law, he meant that we are not under the condemnation of the law. Romans 8:1-2 says “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.” Since we are not under the condemnation of the law does not mean we can sin. Romans 6:15-16 continues and says “What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?” To be saved we must repent of our sins and live righteously.
