I’m going to think out loud here because I haven’t given this much thought in awhile. I used to think it was incredibly sexist because Sandy changed for her man and Danny wouldn’t be with her openly unless she turned into a “bad girl”, but now I’m rethinking it. I used to think Sandy’s transformation was pure peer pressure (try saying that 5 times fast) but I don’t think she was ever happy the way she was because she was timid so maybe it was all about her finding confidence? And as many people use in argument, Danny had feelings with her before she “changed” and actually tried to changed for her too. I think it depends on how you look at it, and if you look at it from the perspective of Sandy gaining confidence and making her own decisions instead of insisting that she was doing it SOLELY for Danny. 

Another note, the Pink Ladies don’t take shit from anyone. They all have different relationships with men, Rizzo and Kenickie and Marty and “Freddy”, Jan and Roger, etc. Some healthier than others. But all of them women are diverse and in control and make their own decisions, so that’s always refreshing to see. They have lives and interests outside of their men, I guess. 

There are some problematic lyrics of course and Danny is an ASSHOLE in the beginning, lying to his buddies during “Summer Nights” to seem cool in front of the guys, but I think all of the men by the end of the musical kind of respect women more than they did in the beginning. 

So those are my musings, it’s not perfect, but I don’t think on the whole it’s as sexist as I once thought.
