the reasoning was: “it’s the 60s in Oklahoma, they’d probably treat her as a maid since they’re rich, not like a daughter so it’s not historically accurate, the main character should be rich because he’s implied to be white but the author made him poor for no reason”

Ok so someone on outsiders TikTok (because of course it’s TikTok) said Daryl Tofa (aka the Broadway actor for Two-Bit in Outsiders) is… white?

Okay so the movie and the musical have 3 major differences!

1. The boys' eccentric taxidermist grandfather (don’t worry about it) does not appear in the stage version, the family simply inherits his home directly.

2. Star gets significantly more time in the spotlight than she did in the original film thank goodness, and Lucy receives her own solo to explore her past.

3. The main vampire group led by David operates much more like an active on-stage rock group.

4. Star and Paul were changed to be played by black people. Alan is played by a woman, but they still refer to Alan as he/him, obviously gender ≠ pronouns so this is no big deal for me. But this has sparked up some trans man Alan which is fun.

Okay basic summary for the musical time, I like the movie but the musical is fun:

It’s 1987, so yay.

Lucy and her sons, Michael and Sam, move to Santa Carla. While checking out the boardwalk, Michael falls for a girl named Star, which gets him mixed up with a local rock band of vampires called The Lost Boys, led by David. Meanwhile, Sam meets the Frog Brothers in a comic book shop, and they warn him the town is crawling with vampires. Michael hangs out with Star and the gang, ends up drinking vampire blood during a sketchy initiation, and wakes up with the superpower to fly. Sam starts noticing Michael acting totally weird and violent, and the Frog Brothers confirm the worst: Michael is turning into a vampire. Back at home, mom Lucy is dating a local guy named Max, completely unaware he's actually the head vampire trying to trap her as his bride. Things come to a head when Sam, the Frog Brothers, and the family team up for a totally epic awesome showdown against Max and the Lost Boys. In the end, they defeat the vampires, Star and Michael turn back into humans, and everyone gets their happy ending. Except for David. Fs in the chat.

Oh and Sam’s superpower according to the solo he has is helping it be cool to be queer. So. Yay!

Is the musical campy sometimes? Absolutely! Is it fun as hell? Absolutely.
