Cultural Centers at UNC: Opportunities for Support
by Marissa Antola, UNC Undergraduate
It was a crisp Friday morning, I was walking to class just as I do every Friday. I’m walking along the sidewalk behind a group of students and I over hear one of the student talking about the cultural centers they spend time at. Then I realized many students, and support people may be missing out on opportunities these centers provide and so this blog is dedicated to giving you information about the cultural centers we host on campus.
The multicultural centers will all be hosting an event until September 26. El Movimiento, an exhibit that tells the story of the Chicano civil rights movement in Colorado, will be displayed in the Mari Michener Gallery in Michener Library For more information on the event go to https://calendar.unco.edu/event/el-movimiento-exhibit-84/
Asian/Pacific American Student Services (A/PASS): A/PASS is there to support and promote the academic persistence and social development of Asian and Pacific Islander students while serving as a source of cultural education for the UNC campus.
César Chávez Cultural Center (CCCC): CCCC supports educational attainment and persistence of Latino students and serves as a resource to the larger campus community regarding the Latino culture. They have a family visit event on September 24th so you and your support people can come and get informed about this center.
Marcus Garvey Cultural Center (MGCC): The MGCC staff seek to create a space where students of color and historically marginalized groups feel connected to UNC and empowered throughout their collegiate experience. The Garvey will be hosting a Food for the Soul: Chicken and Waffles event from 12:30pm-1:30pm on September 20.
Native American Student Services (NASS): NASS offers services tailored to promote thee cultural, academic, and career goals of our Native American student population at the University of Northern Colorado.
Gender & Sexuality Resource Center (GSRC): GSRC mission is to advocate for, educate with, and support all marginalized identities to foster an equitable and inclusive community on our campus while creating a sense of belonging for those who identify across the gender and sexuality spectrums. They have a celebrate bisexuality day event at there house from 12-1 on September 20th, stop by and introduce yourself.
Women’s Resource Center (WRC): The WRC staff are always engaging in dialogue, reflection and activism (both personally and professionally) surrounding issues and concerns for women as well as any marginalized gender experience. The WRC will be hosting their Annual Conference on Gender Justice and Feminism on Wednesday, November 8th on the second floor of the University Center.
Below is a list of all the Multicultural center addresses and website link so you can go and search about the different centers for yourself. Check them out, you may find a new place to call home while you’re here in college.
