7OTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNITED NATIONS

By the end of World War II Franklin Roosevelt’s term United Nations had gained traction as a label for all countries at war against the Axis, but the term was soon given new meaning. In June, 1945 representatives from 50 countries gathered in San Francisco to sign the UN charter and with the dissolution of the League of Nations the following year the new entity took its place on the world stage. 70 years after its charter was signed the UN commissioned this Zio Ziegler mural across the bay, both to celebrate its ideals, and also to reflect the 17 Sustainable Development Goals established as a target for the next 15 years. Over the course of 4 days Ziegler covered the side of the 26-floor Cathedral Building on Broadway in Oakland, CA. Explaining the work to the UN Dispatch he said the figure is both mother nature and the woman down the street, painted with a myriad of flesh tones, wearing clothing that’s a patchwork of patterns from different cultures and holding the dove he says is “the most iconic image of the UN.” @zioziegler @unitednations
