In spite of being really good at improvising a weapon, Murtagh is rarely without one of his own. He has Ithring, another considerably much less flashy sword for when he wants or needs to keep a low profile, and as he is his mother's son, at least one knife. Probably more than one. At one point, he has to completely disarm himself and Eragon's not sure if the number of knives he turns over is comical or incredibly disturbing.
Even after he has a better magical education, he's still got that, now incredibly marked up and annotated, stupid dictionary. It is, in some ways, far more concerning to see him take that out rather than any kind of weapon because he continues to experiment with magic and a lot of the spells he comes up with on his own are worryingly creative and only get more efficient with time.

One of the biggest similarities between Murtagh and his father aside from, you know, the other stuff is that he is vain. Like, while he went feral for a bit, the second he has the resources, he returns to a multi-step skin and hair care routine and well tailored clothes. He is so happy to be able to have a regular bath with nice soap. Is it a waste of magic to use it just to heat water? Probably. Is he going to do it anyway? Absolutely.

His poetry is, for the most part, Bad. He is trying and he enjoys writing it, but it is amateur at best. Thorn will snark at it, but for the most part lets him have it because it makes him happy.

πΈ What nickname do they have for each other that would mortify them if others heard?
Murtagh would normally be mortified or feel like someone was making fun of him to hear the pet names that Orrin tries out for him, but from Orrin it feels different. It's nice to be called darling or sweetheart or other terms of endearment instead of what people normally call him. Similarly, he doesn't think he'd be the sort of person who would use pet names for his partner, but when Orrin asks him something he doesn't quite hear and, "What was that my love?" just slips out, it feels very natural and right.
π³ Who cooks & who sets off the smoke alarm trying to help?
They're both functional enough hot messes who are used to living on their own that they're probably not going to set off the fire alarm. Casimir's just a little more used to scrounging and making an edible enough meal out of whatever's available. When they meet, he's been living off of hardtack, jerky of dubious origins, whatever he can forage, and sharing a bag of oats with his horse and this is not unusual for him.
Murtagh doesn't particularly enjoy cooking and Casimir's a good enough cook, albeit a fairly basic one. Murtagh would much rather clean up afterwards or provide ingredients anyway so when they're traveling together, they easily fall into that rhythm. As much as Casimir doesn't like letting Murtagh pay for things for him, he's practical and has gone hungry often enough that he's willing to put his pride aside for the sake of bread, spices, and fresh enough produce. He's more than happy to add some less practical recipes to his repertoire as a result.
Murtagh's never truly been in a position where he had to worry about where his next meal was coming from, so he can be much pickier about food. Murtaghβs experiences with the Draumar put him off most pork or mushrooms and anything with a texture that reminds him of bring force fed drugged gruel makes him gag.
After Casimir's human grandmother dies, Murtagh gets a couple of her recipes from his family to try to cheer him up. While his attempts at goat cheese dumplings don't taste quite right and it doesn't avert the existential crash out that's been looming over him ever since he realized that he'd likely outlive everyone he loves, Casimir appreciates the gesture.

16- how accepted is their relationship by their community and loved ones
Given that Thorn's standards for a partner for Murtagh are that they are nice to Murtagh, he's ecstatic with Orrin. He's just barely stopping himself from shoving them together like ye olde fantasy barbie dolls and saying, "now kiss."
There are people in Orrin's court, and even amongst his close friends, who think that he is making a mistake with and being far too forgiving towards Murtagh.
Selena would have liked Orrin and would be very interested in his science experiments (mostly to distill and brew better poisons). Morzan would take a little longer to come around to him and would probably take hearing about the thing with the axe to really like him. Regardless, he would have been so proud that Murtagh is following in his footsteps as a king's mistress.
Eragon doesn't think too highly of Orrin and is of the opinion that Murtagh can do better. For all his empathy, he can be stubbornly judgemental and doesn't want to see Orrin as anything other than who he was during the war and doesn't like Orrin encouraging Murtagh's tenancy to question the elves and sussy rocks. The feeling is shared as Orrin still hasn't quite forgiven him for disappearing without an explanation before the final battle and then rushing into it without a plan and very nearly losing if not for everyone else solving his problems for him. However, they are able to be civil with each other and eventually make their peace for Murtagh's sake.
38- how does jealousy manifest in their relationship and how do they usually handle it
Neither of them has great self esteem, which can lead to bouts of jealousy and needing reassurance that they are genuinely wanted. Because of course, Murtagh is so inherently horrible and ontologically tainted and he's so damn difficult that obviously if someone had any real choice they'd pick anyone other than him. And Orrin is a whiny, frivolous person who should be ignored and dismissed. They both tend to go sulk about it and it can make them snappish and mean. Murtagh spends a long time afterwards braced for and expecting rejection. It is easier for Orrin to recognize and articulate that he's feeling unwanted before things get out of hand.
44- do they handle separation well? can they withstand being apart or is it difficult? and is it harder on one more than the other
Murtagh handles separation better than Orrin does, being more accustomed to being alone. He eventually starts writing very dramatic love letters whenever he's off on dragon rider business. Thorn is of the opinion that he can scry whenever he wants and it will be much faster, which Murtagh insists isn't the point. Orrin loves getting the letters and appreciates the sentiment behind the poetry. He's delighted when Murtagh eventually takes Trianna's suggestion to keep a lady's compact mirror with him so that he can more easily scry when he wants. Orrin starts to keep a mirror in his workroom so that they can talk.

π΄ Who falls asleep first & who watches them with heart-eyes?
Orrin has a much easier time falling and staying asleep than Murtagh, so Murtagj has spent a lot of time staring at him and marveling at how he has this wonderful man, who feels safe with him and treats him with kindness and respect that he still isn't quite sure he deserves.
π Who hogs the blanket & who ends up freezing dramatically?
After nearly drowning in a freezing river, Casimir has a very low tolerance for the cold. He gets over his new fear of heights pretty quickly and he's eventually alright enough with water to rememberthat he likes swimming, but he always hates being cold. He is tried and convicted blanket thief. And sweater thief. And cloak thief. And hes very grateful that his boyfriend's partner is a very warm dragon. Murtagh starts keeping extra blankets in his quarters at the academy and eventually in their home.

π How do they act when one of them is sick?
Just a preface to say that I don't particularly like how magical healing feels in this series. It's just very inconsistent in what it can do or what it costs or the consequences of using it.
At first, Orrin's biggest problem is honestly noticing that Murtagh is sick. Not in an oblivious or absent minded way, but because Murtagh will conceal it as best he can or deny anything's wrong at all. And Murtagh isolating himself quarantining isn't unusual. Eventually, Orrin does notice Murtagh slowing down and his cough gets too rough to hide. And now he has to work with Thorn to get Murtagh to rest and let himself be cared for.
When his fever takes enough of a bad turn that Murtagh is willingly resting, he's at his side as much as he can be, putting cool cloths to his brow or holding his hair while he vomits up the few sips of water or broth he manged to coax into him, and trying to keep Thorn from worrying too much. Although Orrin has the best physicians and magical healers of a wealthy, educated kingdom at his disposal, there's still only so much he can do for illness. Until his fever breaks, Orrin has a hard time focusing on his responsibilities. While Murtagh wants to be up and useful as quickly as possible, - because if he's not useful, how can he deserve this kind of love and attention- Orrin knows that he needs to take it easy for a bit and makes big, sad eyes until he relents and lets Orrin spoil him for a few days.
Orrin doesn't quite dismiss his own symptoms. He knows he's feeling a bit under the weather, but that things are in a good place right now and he has qualified, skilled enough advisors and administrators that if he needs a few days rest to get over a cold, he can afford that. It very quickly becomes all too clear that its far worse than that.
Murtagh feels utterly powerless in the face of Orrin's illness. He has all this magic at his disposal, but the ancient language doesn't have a word for whatever virus Orrin's picked up. Murtagh gets restless and agitated as Orrin's aches and pains keep getting worse and his breath takes on this thick, wet sound and just getting out of bed becomes a chore. He needs to do something, needs to be useful, needs to fix this. The best he can do is manage the symptoms. Ease the pain, make breathing less labored, hide the bitter taste of tonics and tinctures with fruit juices and syrup.
He takes his nerves out on the cleaning. Orrin's rooms have never been so tidy as when he's bed ridden. Murtagh tries to read to Orrin from science books, but Orrin's got too much of a headache to pay attention. Thorn has to remind him to look after himself because if he runs himself ragged, who's going to remember how Orrin likes his pillows arranged. Meanwhile, he's pouring whatever magic he has at his disposal into keeping Orrin comfortable enough to fight this thing off.
Murtagh's curled up in a chair by Orrin's bedside, stealing a few guilty moments of sleep, when Orrin stirs. For the first time in days, the light doesn't sting his eyes. He reaches over, his fingertips barely brushing the back of Murtagh's hand. He wakes in an instant. And no matter how coarse and thick Orrin's voice is when he asks if he's doing alright because he looks terrible, it's more beautiful than the finest symphony.
π Who is bolder in public (hand-holding, kisses, etc.)?
Casimir. He grew up in a big, loving family and he's already affectionate with friends and loved ones, so by the time they get together Murtagh's pretty used to Casimir throwing an arm around his shoulder or clasping his hand or just being in his personal space. If anything, he's a little more careful with Murtagh, especially at first, because he notices that Murtagh can be a little uncomfortable about being touched.
Unfortunately, this makes it really easy for Murtagh to dismiss this as something he does for/to everybody. He only gets more adamant about this as he starts to reciprocate Casimir's feelings. Which makes Thorn want to smack him because excuse me?! He's reading over your shoulder! He keeps borrowing your cloak! He clearly did not want that embrace to end!
At first, Murtagh tries to discourage him from being affectionate towards him in places where people know who he is because Casimir has a shot at being accepted and liked if he, at best, tolerates him. But Cas gets right in his face about this. Murtagh is his friend and he cares too much about him to to shun him because it would be convenient.
By the time their relationship becomes romantic, Murtagh is more comfortable recieving and showing affection. He's still not super affectionate in public, but he'll put an arm around Casimir's waist, brush his thumb over the fine bones in his partner's charcoal smudged hands, kiss him in front of enough people to make him feel a little nervous. He understands what a big deal it is that Casimir lets him tuck a loose strand of hair behind his mangled ear.
In the IC fandom, Eragon/Arya. Like, this is probably influenced by the fact that even when I was a teenager, I hated that ship. I thought he was gross and creepy about her and that she had a not like other girls energy that even teenage Gray, who normally loved characters like that, found to be a bit much.
like. I do not understand the appeal. He never learns to hear the word, "no," and she's just not interested at all.
And because I love choosing violence, in general the most annoying shippers are Shakarians from Mass Effect.

I am taking everyone who wants an Arya book by the hands, sitting them down, and telling them as gently as I am able, as someone who listened to To Sleep in a Sea of Stars and is entitled to financial compensation, that They Do Not Want This.

LOL any of the walls of text about how Eragon is just the most oppressed and mistreated little woobie in the whole wide world and everyone is so mean to him for no reason.
This was a while ago so I might not be remembering exactly right, but pretty soon after reading the book, I read a post along the lines of, "Now Murtagh's experiences have humbled him enough that he can settle down with Nasuada and let Thorn bond with a more worthy rider." I can't remember who exactly they wanted Thorn to go to, I feel like it was Orrik. Thought that post was big dumb.

i'm kind of picky about my fics but like. Fics that carry on the author's tenancy to make every female character fixated on having babies. Hate that shit. Or just overly floofy Selena will make me GTFO real fast. Like. Love her but like. Look. She enjoyed and eagerly participated in Morzan's cruelty until it threatened someone she cared about.
