You know some people might say I am a monster for saying this but I honestly wish kuruk never succeeded in getting ummi back not that I like seeing him miserable but it's a way to symbolise the price of being the avatar and protecting the world over your own well being that life will break your soul in the process what do you think?
I don’t know if he has actually gotten his wife back in canon material.
I think i heard a theory that it was somehow implied in legend of Korra because he stopped wearing his polar bear dog fur.
But i don‘t know if this is enough to call it canon.
Also I don‘t think that it is that serious imo. He was perhaps one of the avatars that suffered the most (arguably), given how he basically made his soul and body rot while he was still alive, all while forcing himself to stay alive and to keep fighting.
So his soul has already been broken in canon (literally) so idk if fans thinking that he should get his wife back would change a lot about this price he has to pay.
Hey Mug! How do you think Aang would react if he found out that Toph was the reincarnation of Ummi? How does Koh react?
This is one I haven't really thought much about myself, so I here I am after taking some time to think about it.
I personally think Aang's reaction would be mostly fear but also a mix of joy and catharsis. Slight relief but that would be washed over with the fear and sorrow he'd have from that knowledge. I think being as spiritual as he is, he would be elated to know that Toph was from his past life, confirming the Swamp quote, "… Time is an illusion. And so is death.", so to speak. Aang would genuinely be happy, but he'd be fearful of Koh and what happened to Ummi, trying to protect Toph from repeating a similar fate. He would tell Toph, and of course she would brush it off, but it would be a source of discourse between the two since Toph would feel that she is not Ummi and think Aang is trying to justify being with her. Which would have Aang reassure her and the two work out their relationship and what that means with this new knowledge.
Koh would be privy to this knowledge at some point prior to these two getting together. I think this would happen after the Swamp Episde in book 2 of ATLA. Koh would get bold when Toph and Aang do get together and try to relay his threats to Toph for what Avatar Kuruk did and of Ummi's fate. He'd toture Aang with dreams of Ummi's death and replace her with Toph to mess with him. The spirit will react aggressively and lash out to try and seek revenge on the avatar.
I can just envision a whole story for this ask, but I'm trying to keep it short. I do love the Ummi-Toph theory, but I'm not sure if I'll ever get around to fully using it in my fics (doesn't mean I won't try).
This was a really good ask! Thank you for feeding my inbox Ronin! :)
Random question but do you have any? Kuruk x Ummi headcannons?(I love these two but it's so hard to find any content on)
I'm so sorry for the late answer :') they don't cross my mind as much as Rangshi but I definitely have a few.
Ummi is one of the few people to actually win against Kuruk in Pain sho. She's a pretty good player and he got distracted (by her) and fell into a trap.
They go hunting together on occasion
They wanted to have children one day but sadly that didn‘t work out
Ummi has always held a bit of a dislike against Kuruks team Avatar because they don’t check up on him enough in her opinion
Kuruks wedding gift for her was another polar bear dog skin so that they can match ^-^
I see them as a couple that traveled a lot before finally settling down at one of the poles (more likely the south pole because Kuruk wasn‘t that close with his family anymore)
Kuruk told her just about everything he learned on his travels (mainly royal gossip)
Sorry this isn‘t all that much but it was everything I could think of at the moment :)
Hi, I'm not sure if I already asked you this, but I love your art first of all. But I was also wondering if you have any Kuruk headcannons or Ummi headcannons?
I can never find any content on these guys.
hello! yes you did i am sorry i always take a while to reply to asks. but i am not sure if i can help you because i have to admit that all headcannons i have about kuruk and ummi involve in some way this blue scrunkly guy here.
I like to imagine that he popped up in Kuruk's life during the time when Kuruk was fighting spirits and humans left and right for his own enjoyment and to distract himself from the pain and depression that came from the damage he sustained previously when he fought the rough dark spirits.
The dark water spirit appearing and challenging to spare and fight was an insufferable blessing in disguise. And the start of Kuruk's regular migraine and backache.
Despite Nyatiha's best attempts to help Kuruk get rid of this spirit. It was pointless, and over time an unlikely friendship began. Especially during a time when Kuruk tried his best to isolate himself from his friends. Ummi got to meet and know the dark water spirit as well, and they both hit it off. Being on one wavelength when it came to chaotic ideas and plans and the greater good. The more heartbreaking it was when eventually Koh took Ummi away from Kuruk as punishment for the way he dealt with spirit affairs, causing an imbalance between the two worlds.
I like to think... that in his grief... some hatred and anger burst out of Kuruk all over again. He and the dark water spirit fought again. Kuruk refused any help, trying to save Ummi himself.
Meanwhile, the dark water spirit rescues her body and begs Tui and La to help him save his friends. Tui did take pity on him and painted on Ummi's body a new face, creating the painted lady. Which is... not the same as Ummi. Meanwhile, Kuruk realized that he can't defeat Koh, because in doing so he would kill Ummi as well.
I do as well think that Kuruk is horrified by what the dark water spirit did to Ummi's body, avoiding the painted lady at all costs. And also avoiding the dark water spirit, even though he can't quite get rid of him.
Unable to handle his guilt, the spirit decides to face off against Koh to right his mistake, stubbornly believing that he can force Koh to return her face. In his attempt, he loses his face as well.
Kuruk does die surrounded by his friends. But he finds himself alone in the spirit world, over and over facing off with Koh just to see his love and an old friend again.
Puh... uh... sorry it ended kind of somber. I do have... some doodles that, if I ever come around to drawing them, are like more memey or silly drawings of Kuruk, Ummi, and the dark water spirit interacting similar to this one I already did once. Link
But yeah, I have to admit that my whole interest with Kuruk and Ummi began because I like the headcanon that Koh stole the dark water spirit's face, and that's me trying to make it make sense. It's one headcanon on how it could have happened. And as well, one headcanon of how the painted lady could have been born.

This took me forever, but I finally finished this Kuruk/Ummi piece. I adore them, so feel free to leave any Ummiruk or Kuruk headcanocs in the comments.
ummi
Kuruk's love for Ummi and Kuruk's love for Hei-ran were both deep and genuine and real, and neither of those relationships or those emotions invalidate the other in any way, and I really enjoy that.
Kuruk had feelings for someone, deeply adored and admired and grew with this person, there was something mutual there that didn't work, and then, he had feelings for someone else, deeply adored and admired and grew with this person in this mutual second-chance at love. ...I mean, that one also didn't work out because the universe hates Kuruk, but still!
