Umiro is one of those games that makes for a really pretty screenshot but can't quite live up to its own sales pitch. The beautifully geometric scenery evokes Monument Valley, but unlike that game the visuals in Umiro are all extraneous. The actual mechanical components of the game are just the player characters, the goals, the walls, and the obstacles.

Today we’ll be introducing Huey and Satura, our lost protagonists. (Protagonists are always lost in dangerous places, and they are often amnesiac...)

Without giving too much away, you start the game with Huey (above), lost and alone in an unfamiliar place that we call Umiro. He’s clearly lost his memory but is curious enough to be able to eventually figure out what he should do. In spite of the strange predicament he has found himself in, the fearless Huey eventually runs into Satura.

Unsurprisingly, Satura has also lost her memory and she doesn’t take too kindly to Huey initially. He seems to be after all, a complete stranger to her. Yet, Huey seems to know about her past. The two of them find themselves working together with your guidance to find a way out of the dangerous landscape...

If you’ve seen gifs that we’ve posted in the past you’ll probably remember that Umiro has two states, a colorless state and a colorful state. Huey and Satura have the ability to restore color to the world as they walk across the unfamiliar lands, and they can permanently restore color to each part of Umiro by breaking the colored crystals found everywhere.

Why is that the case? Did some cataclysmic event drain the color and life from the land of Umiro? Are the omnipresent cyan and red crystals storing all the color in the world for some nefarious reason? What is their purpose? What does Umiro mean?

You’ll soon be able to make sense of it when the game releases and we hope you’ll enjoy the puzzles and sights of Umiro as much as we enjoyed making it!
