As he gazes out over the water, Nao presses his palm against his chest where an ache refuses to leave. It’s like the ocean is calling to him, but there’s no way for him to respond. It's been this way all his life but has steadily worsened since the accident. And he wishes more than anything for someone to save him from this hell - to take the longing away.
When the sky begins to change color, Nao turns his wheelchair away, doing his best to ignore the ache in his chest. The pull is always strongest when he leaves, but this time there's a sharp pain that almost takes his breath away. He doesn’t know what makes him turn back to the ocean, but he catches a glimpse of a tail disappearing beneath the water.
What Nao doesn't realize is that the creature the tail belongs to will help him mend his broken spirit and prove to him that he's enough just the way he is.
“Never do that again.” Nao punctuated each syllable carefully. One of his hands gripped his uniform shirt over his rapidly beating heart. The other desperately held onto his wheelchair to the point that his knuckles turned white. Umemiya tilted him backward, causing Nao to shout in panic. “Ume-!”
Umemiya let out a hearty laugh as he leaned over Nao and righted the wheelchair. “Come one, you gonna tell me that wasn’t fun at all?”
The last time Nao had felt his heart pounding like this was back when he still played baseball in middle school. He missed the feeling of adrenaline in his veins and the excitement of doing something unexpected. Except, he hadn’t realized just how much he’d missed it.
However, if he told Umemiya that, Umemiya would probably go about pushing him around in his wheelchair like a maniac again. “Not at all,” he said. His voice shook slightly as his body calmed down.
Umemiya’s grin widened. “It’s alright.” Nao frowned. “I can tell ya liked it.” Crap, was it really that obvious? “Don’t worry, I’ll just find something else to surprise ya with.” He stopped pushing Nao forward.
Nao titled his head back to get a better look at Umemiya. “Like wha-” He tried to ask but the words stopped short as Umemiya leaned down and pressed his lips to Nao’s forehead. Oh. Umemiya leaned back. His face was colored a pretty red. “That…” Nao couldn’t say it was completely unexpected. He’d thought that maybe Umemiya had liked him more than friends, but he never thought Umemiya would act on it. “That was a surprise.”
Umemiya’s face turned a brighter red. “That’s all you’re going to say about it?!” Nao grinned at how embarrassed Umemiya looked. “Nao!” This time Nao was the one to laugh. “Come on!”
“Sorry!” Nao turned his chair around so he could properly face Umemiya. “I can’t think of anything to say.”
That caught Umemiya’s attention. “You can’t?” Nao could see him trying to figure out if that was a good thing or not.
“Nope.” Nao grinned. He reached up and grabbed Umemiya’s collar. Umemiya had about five seconds of confusion before Nao pulled him down into a quick kiss. “No words.” A smile broke out on Umemiya’s face.
Rare pair week concludes with @daiyarpwk2020 with the prompt of Free day. Umemiya takes Nao swimming as often as he can, because he knows Nao loves how free and unconstrained he feels floating in the water. Umemiya swears to himself no matter what one day he’ll buy him a house with a pool…

Umemiya: What's wrong with the way I dress?
Nao: You know, some people might say that all the black leather kind of makes you looks like an evil villain. Not me, I think you look like a sexy motorcycle.
Inubushi: Nao-kun, pull it together.

UmeNao Headcanon after Umemiya is all "I'll give these three years to you" stuff. So there's a time after they graduate, bawling their eyes out, that Umemiya is apologizing that he lied. He promised three years to Nao, but what he wanted to say was his life. Every moment dedicated to Nao made life more worth living, and he felt alive living for Nao. And Nao is crying just as hard, but smiling, saying it's not a lie, that that's not how lying works. He said something and fulfilled it. If he promises more he need only promise more. And Umemiya tries to talk, but it's just not coming out, so Nao speaks over him. "In return for your three years, the years I only got through because you were with me, I offer all my years future to you, if you would have them." "Of course. I'll take your years if you accept all the ones I give you. My life is yours." Just a nod, since they feel overwhelmed by emotions. After another moment, Nao speaks up, in a whisper, which is fine since Umemiya has his head in listening range on Nao's shoulders. "This sounds like a marriage proposal." "I'd like it to be, if you'd have me." "Yes, Ume-chan. It's odd to say, but I take your life if you take my love." And it's way too corny and also so smooth, and Umemiya is just exploding from joy. Umemiya almost lifts Nao out from the wheelchair just to twirl him around, but restrains, barely. Instead he gets on Nao's level by kneeling on one knee and taking one of Nao's hands. "I'll take your love, but know I'll return it more than you can probably handle." There's no ring to exchange, but they still don't mind. It's their word that's the real cement of their love. When they say their lives will be dedicated to the other, it's easy enough to see they mean it.
