Battle Arena Toshinden Ultimate Revenge Attack - Console Fighting Games of 1996
Battle Arena Toshinden Ultimate Revenge Attack is the second Toshinden title released for the Sega Saturn, arriving in 1996 as a fully new game rather than a tweak of Toshinden 2. Unlike Toshinden Remix, which reworked the first PlayStation entry, URA abandons the original storyline entirely and introduces a standalone plot centred on the mysterious assassination of elite fighters around the world. The game expands the roster to 15 characters, adding newcomers RonRon, Ripper, and Tracy, along with three new bosses and secret fighters, while removing the original final boss and Remix’s exclusive character.
Gameplay in URA blends elements of the first two PlayStation titles: movement resembles the original Toshinden, while the combo system is closer to Toshinden 2. This hybrid approach gives the Saturn version a distinct feel, with faster pacing and more aggressive combo flow. As with the rest of the series, URA maintains its weapon‑based combat and anime‑styled presentation, offering Saturn players a unique branch of the Toshinden lineage not found on PlayStation.
