Black Sesame Lovage Ice Cream swirled with Sunny Sunchoke Ice Cream
Over half a century ago, a printing company was created by two New Jersey brothers. They hired a recent graduate as a part-time employee, who used his chemistry background to systematize the company’s collection of pigments. Less than 10 years later, this employee bought out the original brothers who were in debt and turned the company into Pantone. Pantone became known for the Pantone Guides, a small fan deck of color swatches, which greatly helped designers to color match.
2021 marks the 21st year, that Pantone has selected a “color of the year.” The color (or in certain cases like this year, two colors) is chosen after a two-day debate of color officials. The color is meant to represent the zeitgeist.
This year’s spirit is expressed by Ultimate Gray—a solid and strong shade—and Illuminating—a sunny yellow. Pantone asserts that these two individual colors “highlight how different elements come together to support one another.” The color combonation epitomizes strength, positivity, happiness, hope and resilence.
