Actually personality is quite heritable (around 50%) according to twin studies in psychology. However, it’s not the case that someone’s personality is always 50% from their parents’ genes since heritability is a an average population estimate, so it’s very difficult to judge whether resemblence between two people is genetic or not
Hello! I happen to have a bachelor’s degree in Genetics. As far as I know, studies that link personality traits/disorders (for example, psychopathy) to a gene or set of genes are still highly controversial in the field (none of my professors had a definite stance on the subject, for one), usually because a lot of those inherited traits are associated with epigenetics or triggers caused by environmental circumstances, for example.
I’m sure you know the subject yourself, but twin studies are indeed a method of analysing population genetics and a great tool to explore heritability, meaning the proportion of phenotypic variance attributable to genetic variance. This is a method often used to analyse discrete (meaning, quantitative) traits such as body height, body weight, development of complex diseases such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, Chron’s disease, etc. It seeks to explore to what extent the environment or the genome plays a hand in a given trait. Phenotypic variance can be split up into genetic and environmental components--be it shared/common environmental or unique environmental differences. In simpler terms, because monozygotic twins can share up to 100% of their DNA, it’s easier to discard the genetic component and attribute any phenotypic variances to a difference in the environment in which each twin grew up.
You see, if Henry VIII had grown up with his grandfather, his influence could be considered an environmental component, but it was not the case. I’m sure there are papers out there studying the heritability of personality traits, but heritability is a statistic tool and we know that one can virtually find a statistic correlation for anything if you apply the right test or choose the right variable. Heritability studies that analyse discrete phenotypic traits are far more respected in the field and, as you said it yourself, heritability is an average population estimate, so it will vary from country to country, for example.
