Chinese company UleFone has recently introduced the Gemini smartphone, offering a number of features at a very inexpensive price tag.  Available at a very reasonable price of $129.99, it’s not breaking performance records, but still packs enough power to handle everything except playing games on top graphics settings.

There are so many audiophiles out there who want to carry their music experience wherever they go, I don’t mean the average guy with a pair of headphones and a phone, I’m talking true music lovers that know the difference a great FLAC track can make. You can find them on the subway, walking beside you on sidewalks, going and coming from work or school with a solid set of headphones on their head. It seems like they exist in another dimension altogether. These magical musical gadgets which have the ability to transport you to another world are expensive, well not anymore.

Ulephone launched Vienna, a smartphone with Mediatek MT6753 8 core 64 bit processor, 3GBs of LPDDR3 RAM and fingerprint sensor in March, 2016. The most important feature of this phone is that it packs DAC and operational built in amplifier. It’s the audiophiles dream come true in an affordable under $200 bracket.

The Design

The design of the phone is quite modern, made up of polycarbonate and aluminum alloy. It has non slippery rear and curved edges. The 5.5 inch 1080p display is 2.5D and the images are quite sharp. The back panel hosts a fingerprint sensor and 13mp camera which shoots perfectly well in well lit conditions as well as holds a dual tone LED flash for darker indoor or night shooting. It can record 1080p videos at 30FPS. The battery is about average for a phone these days sitting at 3250mAh.

Swappable Storage

It comes with 32GB of internal storage, expandable upto 64GB. Since it’s a music based phone, people will surely want to fill it with studio quality FLAC audio files. Having the memory card slot makes it the ideal partner for a large library. It runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Ulephone adds it’s own launcher called the U-launcher which offers themes that go beautifully with the design of the phone.

The usual specs

It has LTE 4G support, wifi and Bluetooth 4.0, but no NFC, it seems many handsets are no longer adopting NFC support, possibly due to security and also fingerprint payment/transactions gaining more traction in the commerce division.

After 2 hours of testing

The phone appears buttery smooth on the maiden sail. It suffers no stutters, or lags. The few bulky apps we tested on it the phone came out perfectly smooth. The 8 core 64 bit processor is snappy but gets warm on some more intensive work. The most important feature of the phone is the NXP smart audio which consists of DAC and an amplifier. With a great pair of headphones and some studio quality audio files this phone will make your sound come alive and alone would be reason enough to buy this phone. Even though Vienna’s sound BOX chamber is a little bigger than that of ordinary budget phones, the company stresses that the speaker can barely fulfill the capacity of the amplifier. Not having any of the required gear (including ears that know how to tell the difference) I can not comment on the actual output, but spec wise it is amazing.

My only disadvantage: It’s large size.

It’s a phablet, and is suppose to be that way but it will be highly inconvenient for anyone who’s not used to large phones. Something you can get used to , but still a negative for some.

The Vienna is attractive, it takes a bold point of difference that appeals to a unique market segment; those who want an amazing audio player without the high price. Something unique the Vienna possesses, at least until it is copied by others. The phone is available in various colors, and starts at $169.99.
