Random Neopets review request: Ukali?
(No Neopet requests in the inbox right now, so I'm doing a petpet one of my own choice.)
The Ukali is one of my favorite petpets. It's kind of a dragon, but with these lovely long whiskers and feathery "horns" that make it read much differently than a regular dragon. The main feature, however, are those incredibly droopy, soulful eyes. I like that it's not overtly sad, but rather just has an inherent bloodhound-esq look to it. The artwork is also nice; good use of line weight, layered shading, and the pose is simply very pretty.
Favorite Colours:
Darigan: While I prefer the droopy-eyed look, the Darigan Ukali is still a very nice design. The spines build off the of the natural wing spikes of the original, as does the sharper horns and devil tail. I also like the striking yellow and black palette. Bonus points for having completely new artwork as well.
Faerie: Once again, I like these guys sad, but the Faerie Ukali still looks great. The curly head "horns", faerie wings, and intricate markings make it quite beautiful, and I again appreciate that it has completely new art (as well as a unique pose).
Valentine: There's just something inherently charming about having this sad sack be all done up with pink and hearts. You aren't really going to break this little guy's heart, are you? The shading is maybe a smidge over-detailed, but the design (featuring a few tail stripes and a very big bow) is simple and easy to read.
BONUS: I just have to give the gray Ukali a shoutout for having an incredibly funny description:
Least Favorite Colour:
8-Bit: Most of the Ukali's colours, even the recolors, are very nice. However, while the 8-bit Ukali clearly had effort put into it, the design is really hard to read. Maybe this is just a me problem, but I feel like I lose everything to abstraction past the head, and I can only really figure out what's going on with it by looking at the original. Also, pretty sure those "pixels" are not all the same size.
