Sean O'Malley stops Aljamain Sterling in the 2nd! New BW champion!
It was the Conor McGregor counter. Back quarter step on the over extending open guard cross from Aljo and O'Malley fires a right hand down the middle that floors him. Followed by a lot of GnP and the fight is over.
The first round was uneventful as heck. O'Malley struggled to get any offense going beyond some front kicks as he was forced onto the front foot as Aljo was content kicking the inside leg and retreating. Honestly, I think that should have been Aljo's strategy. Trying to pressure O'Malley when you are not a comfortable boxer AND you have the reach disadvantage. I think waiting for O'Malley to overextend (or trying to draw that out of him) and then tying up world have worked better. But he got O'Malley to the fence at the end of the first round and I think he liked what he felt cause he went right back to it in round 2. Tried to explode forward to get O'Malley to retreat but basically sprinted right into that range O'Malley loves.
UFC 292 is tonight.
We got some value up and down the card. Interested in seeing the Silvas fights in the opener. While I didn’t care to watch TUF, I do know all four fighters in the finals and they’re all interesting enough.
Main card features a step up fight for Ian Garry in the prospect killed Neil Magny. Im weirdly not expecting much from Vera-Munhoz but I like both guys so hopefully they deliver. And obvious we got Sterling-O’Malley and Zhang-Lemos topping things off. Good stuff.
one of the things that interest me about the Sterling-O'Malley fight is that this might be the first time Sterling faces off with someone with a similar frame as himself, super long. Sandhagen got taken down instantly so we don't really have much to work with there. Many of the advancements in Sterling's kickboxing game have been built around being bigger than his opponent (Rivera, Munhoz, and Cejudo). Man has a lot of extra space to work with and is able to get away with stuff because of it. O'Malley is longer than Sterling and does his best work right at the range Sterling likes to kickbox from.
It'll be a difficult fight for Sterling if he can't get O'Malley down or at least present enough of a threat that it forces O'Malley to react to every shot feint.
These fights have been so fun I forgot we're getting the sad reappearance of Chris Weidman after his leg snapped like two years ago. Also last fight before the main card.

Zhang Weili completely dominates Amanda Lemos for 5 rounds! Defends title!
Zhang has fully embraced her newly developed wrestling and grappling game. She is an absolute monster when she gets on top of you. Came out and instantly got Lemos down by catching a body kick and kicking out the posting leg. From there, she just started beating on Lemos. Passing her guard and reigning down elbows and GnP. Lemos, crafty as she is, threatened with a couple of ninja chokes but Weili popped out. In fact, on one, she managed to use Lemos' ninja choke to take her back and just start wailing on her from back mount. 0 idea how Lemos survived. The 2nd and 3rd were more of the same. Zhang was hitting some gorgeous entries on her takedowns, catching Lemos as she came forward. Hitting an angle or wrapping a leg. Then she was beating on Lemos from top position again. Took the fourth round of in a way. Lemos had some success but it was tit for tat. In the fifth round, Zhang actually knocks Lemos down and goes hard for like 60 seconds for the finish but Lemos survives. Zhang went for the same crucifix position she got against Esparza but Lemos managed to get to her knees. Not without eating a 100 more punches though.
I have 0 clue how Lemos made it to the final bell. Weili Zhang landed something like 300 strikes. HARD STRIKES. Almost 260+ more than what Lemos landed. And she managed to make it 25 minutes. That woman is build TOUGH.
Zhang is just a hoss at 115lbs. If you cannot knock her block off on the feet or get her down first, you are in for a difficult night. I don't care if they do the Xan or Suarez fight next, just hope we see Zhang again at the end of the year.
Ian Garry already passing the Neil Magny prospect intelligence test by
Learning from Lorenz Larkin and just kicking the crap out of Magny's lead leg.
Not clinching with Neil Magny.
It seems so simple but you'd be surprised.
Brad Tavares takes decision over Chris Weidman.
In terms of middleweights with any type of juice to their names, Tavares was probably the safest middleweight the UFC could give Weidman for his return. He's not a power house. Fights an even steady clip and will fall into whatever direction his opponent wants. He entered 2-4 in his last 6 fights and got finished his last time out.
And it wasn't enough for Weidman to pull out the win. He had stretches of success. When he actually fired along the fence, he was landing and hurt Tavares a couple of times. The pressure was there. But his takedowns never came close except for the time he kicked Tavares in the junk. Tavares spent most of the fight just battering the hell out of Weidman's good leg, forcing him southpaw for most of the fight. Weidman did better checking kicks from southpaw but could not generate the offense to capitalize on the breaks. Just didn't have the legs under him after all the kicking.
