First post in a while.
Though I am not able to speak of the things disclosed in the meeting I attended yesterday morning, I must say that I am slightly disheartened by the actions taken on the part of the CFPB. Entering this internship, I understood from a consumer standpoint why the CFPB was created. Seeing the same organization from the viewpoint of the financial services industry has forced me to rethink my notions. Emerging from the financial crisis, I was under the belief that the financial services industry should be blamed, and fined, and the country would be a better place with more enforcement and more regulations. From my viewpoint now, especially with the actions taken against Bank of America, I cannot conceive of a worse policy. Sure, I believe in regulation, but that does not mean that the government needs to breathe down the neck during every decision the banking community makes, nor does it mean that the banking industry should be heavily fined for every mistake that they make. In a world that discourages mistakes, how is anyone ever supposed to advance? How is innovation supposed to foster in an environment in which one either follows toe-to-heel on the government example? It just all seems like a bad idea to me; a very bad, very expensive idea.
