Communication alumni filmmakers Raymond Velasquez, Aldo Sandoval, and Melissa Hernandez are making the news as their COMM 101T Media Activism project entitled Chicano Park is being featured in the Frontera Filmmaker Showcase at this year’s San Diego’s Latino Film and Arts Festival, March 12-22, 2020. The 27th edition of the festival will take place from March 12-22, 2020 at the AMC Fashion Valley 18 and Digital Gym Cinema. The festival will present over 160 films from Latin America, the United States, and Spain. Audiences will have the rare opportunity to meet filmmakers and actors from all over the world.  The Latino Film Festival Opening Night Party will take place on Thursday, March 12, at Bread & Salt. The Closing Night Awards Ceremony & Concert will take place on Saturday, March 23 at the Music Box San Diego. The film entitled, Chicano Park: From the Mind of a Conceptual Artist has already won Best Documentary in our Annual Media Production Showcase 2019 prompting them to share their work on a wider scale. Raymond Velasquez, Aldo Sandoval, and Melissa Hernandez were inspired in part by the 1988 Chicano Park documentary directed by Marilyn Mulford and the famous artwork displayed in this San Diego landmark. They presented a history of the park from the perspective of muralist Salvador Torres and screened the film on Aug. 18 at La Bodega Gallery in Barrio Logan. In Memory of Gayatri Singh Our dear colleague and friend Gayatri Singh passed away on October 31st, 2019. As the Geisel Library liaison to the Department of Communication, she worked closely with many of our faculty and our graduate and undergraduate students.
