From childhood until the end of his first year of high school, Jin placed the happiness of those around him before himself, doing whatever it takes to please them [his family; peers; adults]. Believing that their happiness would lead to his own.
‘Be a good boy and people will like you’; ‘If you are smart, people will be your friends.’; ‘If you were better, we’d be proud of you.’
Words from his parents that drove him to work hard, be kind, try his best. In reality, while he is intelligent, Jin isn’t a genius or anything horrendously special but he’s a hard worker. Though, in the long run, it was never quite good enough for his peers to overlook his family’s flaws or for him to measure up to his brother.
‘If you were better, people wouldn’t bully you.’; ‘It’s your own fault people dislike you.’; ‘Who would like something like this?’; ‘If you aren’t the best then you might as well be nothing.’
Work harder and soon people will like you, he thought. Soon, he’ll be as good as Ken and everyone will want to be his friend and his parents would be proud. Work harder. Don’t mind what they say or do, they’ll like you soon enough. You’ll see. As long as Ken loved him, then he would work hard for his sake.
By the end of his first year of high school, his brother who was in graduate school decided to marry his girlfriend whom Jin disliked for various reasons. The act that struck betrayal within him. His pillar cast him away for something better; someone who could give him a better future, children and a family.
During his second year of high school, he changed his outlook and decided that he would stop putting everyone else first and seek his own enjoyment and happiness. His happiness would not depend on anyone but himself. He, alone, cared about himself and that was fine. He had himself and he would work hard at proving the others wrong; his happiness will become their ruin.
‘I do not get lucky; I make my own luck.’
Destiny isn’t something that Jin believes in. He casts that in with luck and any other superstitious beliefs. He hates the idea of being bound and not in control of his life or actions. Jin doesn’t want to be tied to anyone or anything that would control or dictate his every move; that part of his life was long over and done with.
‘I will take fate by the throat; it will never bend me completely to its will.’
He assumes full control of his life and walks the path he has chosen for himself.
