Pixies - U-Mass

I brought the compilation album Death To The Pixies after reading a glowing review of it in Kerrang! Magazine. I was 14, just seriously getting into music and had no idea what to expect. I didn’t like it. It lacked the heavier grit and angsty teenage sounds I wanted. I felt cheated cause I had just brought into some older guys childhood and thought man, this sucks. It’s nothing like what I have been made to believe it is. Cobain had said Nirvana couldn’t have existed without Pixies. Frank Black was spoken so highly of by other musicians at the time. So why didn’t I get it? What was I missing?Â
My favourite track at the time of getting the album was U-Mass. U-Mass had big guitars, an easy to sing along to chorus and was the gateway drug I needed to be willing to explore them later on. Now, years and years later, I love Pixies. I get it. I get what they are, what they represent and what they have done for music. They are true titans of the industry and so many have had a door opened for them because of what Pixies did. Of course, I am too young myself to really know the impact that Pixies had at the time. But their music is utterly timeless. And U-Mass is the track that got a silly 14 year old boy to go, yeah, they're alright. I guess. Could be heavier.Â
U-Mass was the way in when I wanted to be listening to anything else at all that was just heavy and shouty. Being a teenager who already knew everything, I cast them to one side and wouldn’t come back until many years later thanks to those tendrils U-Mass latched onto me years earlier.

It’s summer, and I’ve been busy/lazy/forgetful/tired and lacking some motivation. Time to do a quick catchup. Starting off with a bang.
