One time I was accused of using Ai bc of the dashes and lowkey I was kind of flattered. MY highschool ahhhhh self was going off straight vibes on where to use them. I thinks it’s hard to phase them out since so many fanfic writers do use them, and idk about other people, but we pick up writing styles from what we consume.
I think the most tell tale sign someone is using ai is when you read a story and you have to go “ wait huh?” Even for a second. AI can be grammatically correct and it can bring details into a scene, but it’s so bad at storytelling and tend to repeat ideas a LOT. And it’s a different “wait” than just a new writer’s story. Oh and if someone is posting like A LOT, pretty frequently.
All this to say, i don’t think we need to phase out the em dashes. They’re such a hallmark of fanfic writing.

writing so good u got accused of using ai🙂↕️ u dont know this but i sat up on my bed nd clapped🙏 but yes, i so agree w picking up the writing styles based on what we consume!! i used to be a wattpad fan (whos surprised) nd the amount of fics id consumed from that app def shaped me as the writer i am today😭 used to inhale that shit nd be like "okay, how do i try nd write like them" LMAOOOO didnt realise id been morphing multiple writing styles from the fics until last year😭
im ngl i dont think ive read any fic thats been ai generated but i have used chatgpt for my school notes, nd i def get what u mean🙂↕️ it once gave me the wrong information nd i had to do a double take LMAO ppl in my class have also been using ai to generate their shit nd ur right cs u can easily tell when they do. had my english teacher asking a classmate, being like "did u make that urself?" IJBOL
the posting frequently thing too like how do u have sm life in u to be able to dish out that many fics💔 makes me feel like im lacking nd i have to keep up like DAMN. em dashes r like the backbone of fic writing nd i totally agree w it being a hallmark🙂↕️ its the way u cld easily tell when smn's a fic author w the em dashes oh🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀 also thank u so much anon!! appreciate it❤️❤️
