Professor, Author, Emcee, and Mathematician Tyson Amir has released a focused text that walks his own life story of boyhood and adulthood alongside the social struggles and resistance lore of both the past and present. Part poetry, part academic text book, part memoir- and at all points gripping, Black Boy Poems is unlike any other book I’ve ever read.

As Tyson reflects on his childhood an almost magical mythical world is revealed through is recalling. A city prison the adults talked about is a dark place in the woods, his father’s “Black Room” in the house was a lair of African artifacts, contemporary muses, and books of power. 

Depression and anger are not major tenets of the text, but Tyson’s candor and openness serve as a looking glass into the dark places and hollow hallways Black toddlers, boys, teenagers, young men, men, elders, and even the legacies of the departed endure in the U.S.
