Believe it or not, the world's first mid engined supercar came close to reality back in 1934. Ferdinand Porsche had already designed the Auto Union grand prix racers when he decided a high performance road car with the same mechanics was a good idea. Plans were drawn up for the Type 52 complete with mid mounted supercharged V16, a central driving position and sci-fi looks. Sadly none were built, the car getting no further than the drawing board. Pity.
