@twotiime asked: The woods around Camp Campbell had been quiet that night. It should have been relaxing, but something about it seemed off. As the sun had set earlier that night, the feeling of being watched had risen over the edges of camp, leaving anyone who noticed it unsettled. Now, under the cover of darkness, something rustles in the branches overhead. Whatever it was, it was not easily mistaken for a simple breeze by somebody who was paying attention. Seems like David might have company.
Before he can take the first steps in the woods, David has to battle with that creeping paranoia of being watched. He knows he’s being watched, and sometimes he knows who or what’s there. It’s when they follow him down the path that causes his breathing to shorten.
Every other moment he stops to survey the area, he can hear that rustling in the trees above him, and every time he does he fights himself to ignore it or rationalize it away. Yes, these woods are strange, but sometimes something weird is simply a bird or a hostile squirrel. Sometimes he didn’t have to believe that when he turns around to check behind him, he won’t be looking into the maw of some hungry beast.
Except, now that he’s listening for it, he can’t help but notice how closely it keeps up with him. Oh boy...
