#two-toned lips

I know, I know. It’s definitely no longer 2016 but I’m feeling a little nostalgic. The two-toned lip trend has two variants to its style; there’s the complimentary color combo, and there’s a “clashing” color combination. So with this fun and flirty style of makeup I figured why not play around with what suits my style best? For a flirty fun look I tried Colour-pop’s Frenchie on the top lip, and ChiChi on the bottom.

I found that it works best with a darker tone on top and the lighter being donned on the lower lip. This gives an illusion of your upper lip looking much more full. A darker shade can add a cool WOW-factor to your look if you’re feeling bold.   Here I have Colour-pop’s Tulle on Top and Creeper below.

When the seasons change, one of my favourite things to do is switch up my makeup. I trade out my dark, serious colours for bright and happy ones, paying special attention to the fun array of lipsticks I can wear in sunnier months. This spring, I plan to use some of my favourite shades to recreate the subtle two-toned lips worn by models at Jason Wu SS13. Backstage at the show, MAC artist Diane Kendal used a staggering six products to formulate this effect. Here’s a step-by-step guide to getting the look at home:

1) Line your entire mouth with a bright bluish red lip pencil – Kendal used MAC lip pencil in Cherry, $18.

2) Darken your lip line with an intense violet purple liner, such as MAC lip pencil in Vino, $18.

3) With a lip brush, blend two lipsticks, a deep cool plum and a mid-tonal cool tangerine, and apply to the inner part of your lips to achieve a graduated colour. The models at Jason Wu wore MAC Mineralize Rich Lipstick in Lush Life blended with MAC Mineralize Rich Lipstick in Lady at Play.

4) Using your ring finger, lightly blot a bright magenta lip colour at the center of your mouth for a subtle pop of pink; try MAC Pro Process Lipmix in Fuchsia.

5) For an iridescent matte finish, tap a little of MAC’s Pigment Colour Powder in Neo-Orange, at the center of your lips.
