I was thinking of some lyrics that don’t necessarily pertain to me but would sound so cool to say. I’m not sharing them just yet because—spoiler alert—I’m pretty sure I’m going to use them! This train of thought had me reflecting on the balance between creating music for yourself and making music that resonates with others—especially content they can relate to.

Creating for Yourself vs. Creating for Others

For me, I’d say I mainly make music (and art) for myself. My upcoming album, My Deepest Discovery, is definitely a reflection of that. I like to go deep on self (#pause) and then present my introspection to the world.

This mindset runs in the family, too. My dad is a DJ, and just like me, he doesn’t cater to the crowd. Most DJs hate song requests, but he takes it to another level. He might not play a single song you wanted to hear all night—and he dares you to complain about it. But you don’t need to complain. Just know you’re getting a fire mix. Sit back, enjoy the scratches, and shut up—lmao.

Staying True to Your Vision

This thought process also came up when my aunt asked why I haven’t made Taylor Swift-inspired merch. From a business perspective, sure—it would make total sense to capitalize on her huge fanbase, especially since she was just in Indy.

But here’s the thing: I’m not a Swiftie. I wouldn’t wear T-Swift merch any other time, so why make it? Just to make a quick buck? That’s not how I operate.

I built WELÇOME© and THE CORNER™ on authenticity. Even if no one supported these brands again, I’d still rep them because they’re true to me. Anything I create is something I’d wear—unless it’s for women, in which case it’s something I’d want my woman to wear.

The Balance in Music Creation

If you haven’t heard my songs yet (you definitely should), my preference is making thematic music—songs with set themes or purposes that you can digest, analyze, and move on from.

But here’s the thing: my strong suit is writing hooks. That’s why I can also make songs for others without always diving into my Pulitzer bag every time I cut a record.

Take songs like “Twerkin in the Rain” and “All I Want is U.” They’re simple, relatable bangers. On the other hand, tracks like “Much to Do, Much to Say” and “Terror Era” are more intricate. “Much to Do...” explores unresolved feelings during a breakup, while “Terror Era” flexes my lyrical prowess.

Most of my catalog dives deep, which is why I can’t wait to drop My Deepest Discovery. As the title suggests, I’m trying to go deeper than ever before! (#Pause again—y’all know what I mean!)
