John’s “acquired” items.

My aim with The Whipping Man was to show hints of “the way things were” and the transformation that has since happened. Caleb’s uniform and Simon’s modest clothing seem to reinforce an antiquated power dynamic, but John’s stolen clothing represents his increase in status. The moment I chose to display in my sketch was immediately after Simon’s departure with his rifle and lantern as Caleb and John share a bottle of alcohol; the lighting present is from a few candles and the lightning outside. Overall, I wanted to portray that the characters are in the midst of this transformation, not sure where they stand in this new world.

Caleb (stolen clothes). I imagine him wearing these styles in flamboyant colors, sometimes mismatched.
