Photo of the Day – The Pink-throated Twinspot (Hypargos margaritatus) is one of Southern Africa’s most desirable endemic species, and it’s easy to see why. This is a gorgeous species! Unfortunately for eager birders, this species is not an easy one to find… On top of its restricted range, it is also quite secretive. But the challenge makes actually seeing the bird all the more special.

June 19, 2018 - Green Twinspot or Green-backed Twinspot (Mandingoa nitidula)
These estrildid finches are found in a spotty range through central and eastern Africa. Foraging mostly on the ground, or plucking their food directly from plants, they eat grass seeds and some small insects. Pairs build oval nests from grasses, dry leaves, rootlets, twigs, lichen, feathers, and other materials, usually in tall trees. Both parents incubate the eggs and care for the chicks.
