The Games

Summary: The 69th Hunger Games are here. Annabeth is the Tribute this year, and the Capitol is already in love with her. It is her turn to play the deadly game. Win or lose, she will finally be free from the horror spectacle.

Chapter 2 - In Which Annabeth Says Goodbye

"Annabeth, dear," Nepho crooned, "there's no need to be shy. We're all friends here. Come on up."

With stuttering steps, Annabeth made her way up to the stage. She was escorted by a pair of Peacekeepers who were mostly there to keep her from running away. She tried not to think about how stupid she looked, how people were trading tesserae and what little money they had, how Matthew and Bobby had cried out, how... how just like Magnus and Audrey and Emma had walked up these same steps to their own death.

Nepho hummed in approval at her, offering his hand to her as she took the last few steps. She accepted it with little thought. He was oddly warm and solid.

She kept her eyes away from the screen, willing herself not to look at the disaster of a girl who wouldn't get any sponsors.

"Do we have any volunteers to take Miss Chase's spot?" No one stepped forward. "No, well, Miss Chase, aren't we lucky."

Annabeth gave a curt nod, trying to spot her family. They had disappeared somewhere in the crowd. It was just as well. She was one more child of theirs lost to these games.

No, she told herself, you can't think like that.

Nepho said something to her, something she didn't hear. He looked at her expectantly. After a moment, she blinked and shook her head.

"Very well," he said. "Let's give Miss Chase a big hand here, folks. So brave of her."

There was scattered applause. Which was more than she'd actually been expecting. More people, though, were focused on the fact that they'd finally won something.

"And now," Nepho said, "the gentlemen."

Chapter 1 - In Which Annabeth Does Not Sleep

Less than one day away. And, after that, just one more year until she no longer had a chance at being Reaped for the Hunger Games.

But she would still have a few years of Matthew or Bobby being chosen. They will be of age next year. She didn’t think she could handle either of them being Reaped. It would be… just too much.

People were already saying their family was cursed. Really, who even believed in curses any more? It wasn’t just happenstance that three family members had been Reaped and all three died in the Games. It was the president or some high official for the Games. 

Annabeth had a feeling that they would come after her sooner rather than later, if not taking her out before the Games. She knew why they would take her — her fate, at least, was understandable. But the others? She had no idea.

Chapter 5 — In Which Annabeth Gets A Make Over

“Well, now that you’ve seen your competition, what do you think?” Dramasque said, turning off the tv with a remote.

“I’m dead,” Caspian said, sinking into the cushions of the couch between Bobbin and Ganymede. They both cooed and patted his arms and legs, in an attempt to comfort him.

“Annabeth?” Pox said, waiting for her answer.

“Districts 1, 2, and 4 will be a challenge,” she said, “as they always are. District 3… both of them were volunteers. I’ll have to see what they can do before I make any judgment. 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, and 11 didn’t surprise me at all. Except the boy from 9. He willingly took his brother’s place. I kind of admire that. And the girl from 12. There’s something about her, I can’t place my finger on it.”

“Any allies?”

She nodded, not really wanting to give it away.

“I’m still working on it, but I have a few people in mind.”

“Wait until training,” Bobbin said. “People show their colors in the training room. Trust me in this one.”

Chapter 4 — In Which There Is Plotting Afoot

Annabeth was fairly sure this had been planned by some higher power out there. By now, people surely knew that she was Magnus Chase’s cousin, who’d they’d seen on screen those few short years ago. The very same Magnus Chase who’d befriended the would-be Victor of District 4, the underdog named Perseus Jackson.

Her nails stabbed at her palms as she clenched her fists. She was certain she was going to draw blood. Thankfully no one seemed to notice.

Dramasque placed a hand on her shoulder and steered her in the direction the others were heading. It also happened to be in the same direction as District 4, but Dramasque had made himself a barrier between them. As broad as he was, Perseus was taller. She didn’t feel in the least bit restrained from climbing over Dramasque to tear out Perseus’s eyes.

“Evening, Dram!” Perseus said, clapping his hand against Dramasque’s shoulder.

“Percy, it’s been a while,” Dramasque said.

“Since the Victory Tour. Where were you hiding this entire time?”

“Mostly in District 8. I don’t get called out to the Capitol every couple of days, unlike certain someones.” 

Annabeth caught the look Dramasque gave Perseus. She couldn’t quite tell every emotion that was put into it, but she was certain there was pity.

“Yes, well,” Perseus said, his smile becoming forced as he combed his fingers back through his hair, “it’s a pain and a delight being the Capitol’s favorite Victor.”

Chapter 3 — In Which Annabeth Makes People Cry

By the time the two Victors decided to show their faces, they were already most of the way to the Capitol. Annabeth had been able to watch the Reaping of District 11 and District 12’s was about to begin. 

Caspian sat on the same couch as her, but he sat as far away as possible. Which was fine, except for the fact that Nepho had decided to sit in between them and talk. He even, stupidly, asked about her family.

“It’s so funny,” he said, taking a sip of whatever strong smelling drink he had in the crystal glass, “you have the same last name as three other Tributes. Oh, what were their names?”

“Emma, Audrey, and Magnus,” she said. Panic started to creep up the back of her neck.

“Yes! That was them. Did you know them at all?”

“They were my cousins.”

The Tribute

Summary: The 66th Hunger Games are upon them, and Annabeth is not prepared. She never is when it comes to the Hunger Games. She is grateful that her name isn’t plucked from the glass bowl, but when it’s her cousin… Well… It’s hard to predict how these games will go.

Chapter 3 -  In Which Magnus Talks About Annabeth On TV

The majority of their interviews were a mashup of those she’d seen during the years before, except the boy from District 4. 

“Hello, Perseus,” Apeliotes said, as he and the boy sat down. “Glad to see you made it here in one piece.”

“I’d happily swim all the way here,” he said, “if it meant meeting all of you. And, please, sir, call me Percy. Perseus is for when I get in trouble with my teachers.”

That got quite a few laughs from the audience and Apeliotes. 

“I take it you’re quite a troublemaker then?”

“Oh, trouble seems to find me, but I’m not usually the one making it.” One corner of his mouth tilted up into a smirk, dimpling his cheek. There was an annoying glint in his far-too-green-to-be-natural eyes. In a few days, Annabeth could see the entire Capitol have cosmetic surgery just to mimic the color.

They bantered back and forth for a moment before Apeliotes turned serious.

“Now,” Apeliotes said, “you volunteered this year. You’re rather young for a Tribute from your district.”

It was true, most Tributes from the career districts of 1, 2, and 4 tended to be anywhere from fifteen to eighteen. Perseus was about her age, if she remembered correctly.

“Uh, yeah,” Percy said, tucking his hands under his legs and swinging his feet. “I did, and I’m not too young. I’m thirteen. Well, I’ll be fourteen at the end of the summer.”

There was a murmur from the crowd.

“And the boy you volunteered for?”

“My younger brother. He’s only twelve.”

Chapter 2 -  In Which The Pudding Is Not Eaten

Magnus was standing by one of the massive windows overlooking a malnourished garden. His skin looked a little pale, and his hands were balled into tight fists. He slowly turned back around to face them, letting out a shaky breath.

Annabeth started forwards to give him a hug, stopping short. Right. He wasn’t much of a hugger.

“You okay?” she said quietly, taking slow steps to him.

He shook his head and gave a little laugh.

“I’m going into the Games,” he said, giving her a wry smile. “Guess someone with their name only in there once can be picked.”

He stubbed the toes of his scuffed shoes against the worn carpet. He turned to look back out into the garden.

“This sucks.”

“It can’t be any worse than the time we ran away from home,” Annabeth said, patting him on the shoulder. Tentatively, she rested her hand there. She hoped it conveyed all the comfort she wanted to give to him.

“Those were a good two days,” he said, a sincere smile spreading across his face.

They were quiet for a moment before Lani cleared her throat. Annabeth caught the look that Lani was giving her. Her grip on Magnus’s shoulder tightened.

“What did Uncle Randolph want?” she said, not meeting his eyes.
