The Games
Summary: The 69th Hunger Games are here. Annabeth is the Tribute this year, and the Capitol is already in love with her. It is her turn to play the deadly game. Win or lose, she will finally be free from the horror spectacle.
Chapter 2 - In Which Annabeth Says Goodbye
"Annabeth, dear," Nepho crooned, "there's no need to be shy. We're all friends here. Come on up."
With stuttering steps, Annabeth made her way up to the stage. She was escorted by a pair of Peacekeepers who were mostly there to keep her from running away. She tried not to think about how stupid she looked, how people were trading tesserae and what little money they had, how Matthew and Bobby had cried out, how... how just like Magnus and Audrey and Emma had walked up these same steps to their own death.
Nepho hummed in approval at her, offering his hand to her as she took the last few steps. She accepted it with little thought. He was oddly warm and solid.
She kept her eyes away from the screen, willing herself not to look at the disaster of a girl who wouldn't get any sponsors.
"Do we have any volunteers to take Miss Chase's spot?" No one stepped forward. "No, well, Miss Chase, aren't we lucky."
Annabeth gave a curt nod, trying to spot her family. They had disappeared somewhere in the crowd. It was just as well. She was one more child of theirs lost to these games.
No, she told herself, you can't think like that.
Nepho said something to her, something she didn't hear. He looked at her expectantly. After a moment, she blinked and shook her head.
"Very well," he said. "Let's give Miss Chase a big hand here, folks. So brave of her."
There was scattered applause. Which was more than she'd actually been expecting. More people, though, were focused on the fact that they'd finally won something.
"And now," Nepho said, "the gentlemen."
