READ THEIR ONCE UPON A TIME:
August 3rd, 2018
Glasses clatter as my coworker raise our drinks. Yet another crushed divorce case. Once again I ripped an unfaithful husband to pieces: leaving him without money, without a house, and without hope. I never thought that I out of all people would have so many pleasure in breaking marriages ― I guess it’s just more fun to break people apart rather than uniting them.
Perhaps after being cheated on so many times and enduring it endlessly, I realized that all man lie - and all man cheat. And I just wanted some revenge, and for a revenge, you need a weapon, but I wanted one with style, without causing actual bloodshed. A little a shiny knife that cuts to the quick.
So I went to Law School.
Years of studying hard and diligently, and a broken heart later, I graduated with a motto:
Make law and not war. Because law is twice as hardcore.
In my office, I saw all sort of ‘perfect’ partners cheating on their spouses: for every romantic dinner, scented lavender candles, Tiffany’s sweet talks there is at least one lie. “To Yoona” I hear them, with a smile filled with triumph, and drink after the drink the time passed and I had to go back to my house and it’s only when I get there, to the empty rooms that it strikes me ― I’m a lonely being.
No matter how tough I’m in court, no matter how many husbands I can chase away, I still feel lonely in an empty bed at night. I used to have dreams before, of waking up next to someone that cherished and cared for me, having breakfast together, showering with the same body wash so we can both smell like vanilla and strawberries. All those things that constitute a lovers’ routine are alien for me.
Some nights I drown myself in my favorite beverage, other nights I decide to be more adventurous and grab one of his Cuban cigars. I try to watch the television but the horrible things that happen to women force me to turn it off. And just as I try to place the remote back to where belongs, I see the newspaper with our faces over it, the title ‘A wedding that came straight out of a book’ and fake smiles with fake signs of romance.
I’m living a luxurious lie, but maybe that’s what gives me the strength to make others do differently from me.
