Life was absolutely kicking your ass. You didn't sleep well and haven't been able to for the past month or so. You weren't having any nightmares that you knew of, you just couldn't sleep. But if you happened to sleep at a reasonable time, you'd always wake up in the middle of the night or sleep so light that it didn't do you well.
Things were triggering you left and right, even if you didn't have an even to relate them to. You were a lot more skittish than usual and practically jumped at anything that came into your sights.
Dabi, of course, noticed this. He didn't say anything, but he was keeping a close watch on you, just in case you broke. His usual cold demenor softened a little more. Instead of only showing affection in private, he made the extra effort to hold you hand or give you a kiss to make sure you felt loved.
The subtle touches he'd usually give you from time to time increased, just to comfort you. Dabi even took the extra measure to make sure you didn't go on any missions and stayed at the hideout. All that was on his mind was your safety and that you had someone to keep an eye on you.
----
A soft knock sounded at your door, startling you out of your daze. What were you even thing about? Were you staring at the wall for a while? What were you doing before that? Brushing all the questions away, you gathered your blanket and walked over to the door.
On the other side of the door, Dabi was leaning on the wall with a plate of your favorite food. He's been trying to get you to eat something other than snacks for the past few days. At this point you had a small collection of fruits, granola bars, and breakfast from this morning lined up on your dresser.
Your tired face looked up at him with a weak smile. Before you could greet your boyfriend, he held up a large fork full of the food to your lips.
"Eat something before anything else happens. I wanna make sure that you had something else other than saltine crackers, (Name)."
You reluctantly grabbed the fork and shoveled the food into your mouth. It wasn't that the food was disgusting or anything, it was just the the anxiety was brewing in the pit of your stomach was too great for you to actually keep anything down.
But you did, just to keep Dabi at bay.
Dabi smiled at you, finally able to breathe, and hugged you tightly. He let you go for a second, just to walk into your room and set the plate down, and then continued to hug you.
You hadn't seen each other today because Dabi was busy early this morning. You buried your face in his chest, just taking time to enjoy his warmth. You were able to relax, to just melt in his arms and take in his scent. Dabi smelled like burning wood, of course, but there was a hint caremel along with it.
The two of you stood there for what seemed like hours. He pulled away and placed a kiss to your temple. You didn't feel like talking much and he absolutely understood that. Grabbing the plate from your nightstand, sitting on your bed and patting the spot next to him for you.
For the next few hours, you sat between his legs, letting him play with your hair while you eventually started talking about things that were bothering you. He read you a few chapters of a classic book and helped you eat the plate of food.
It was a slow night, but it was just what you needed.
------
You ended up going to sleep, pressed against Dabi's chest with your arms at his side. His head was rested on the crown of your head as he traced small patterns on your thigh, just to lull you more into a peaceful sleep. When you would stir, he'd rock you slightly and hum you until you stopped shaking. If you cried, he'd be right there, whispering sweet things to you and tracing your face.
In the morning, he was gone, but there were two water bottles and a plate of food by your nightstand. The food was still steaming, meaning he'd only left a few minutes ago. Beside the plate was a small note.
'Take it easy today, okay? I want both of these water bottles and at least half of this food gone by the time I get back. Love ya'
A sloppy drawn heart was at the bottom on the small paper and you couldn't help but smile.
