This is so fucking funny bc I have a huge fixation on researching the Marquis de Sade rn and that’s exactly why I don’t wanna interact with most people online about him 😭 bc I’ve seen people try and be pedantic about his irl abuse and defend him or downplay his abuse for one reason or another…
It’s very bizarre seeing people and even some scholars skirting around admitting he was a predator just bc he made a few good points about abusive power structures in his books and philosophy. He was complacent and a participant in those very structures and acts too, and society kept letting him get away with it because French aristocracy and law couldn’t be bothered to protect poor women, sex workers, and children. He only got caught due to internal familial politics when his in laws were getting fed up with his bullshit putting a stain on their reputation.
Yes he had a big impact on French literature and the future surrealist movement. No that doesn’t make up for his predation, classism, and targeted abuse.
