Fatwa Issued Against TVK Chief Vijay Over Controversial Iftar Party
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay is facing mounting criticism after a Sunni Muslim cleric from Uttar Pradesh issued a fatwa against him. The controversy surrounds a recent TVK leader Iftar party held in Chennai, which has been labeled as disrespectful by Islamic scholars and religious groups.
TVK Leader Iftar Party Sparks Outrage
The fatwa, issued by Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi of the All India Muslim Jamaat, condemns TVK chief Vijay for allegedly allowing non-fasting individuals, including alcoholics and rowdies, to attend the Iftar event. Held on March 8 at YMCA grounds, the gathering was reportedly mismanaged, with several Muslim groups claiming it insulted the sanctity of Ramadan.
The Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamath lodged a formal complaint with the Chennai Police, stating, “The TVK leader Iftar party lacked religious sincerity and included participants who did not observe fasting. This act disrespected our beliefs.”
Accusations of Anti-Muslim Messaging in Films
The cleric also pointed to Vijay’s past film roles, particularly in Beast, accusing the actor-politician of portraying Muslims as linked to terrorism. “Now, as TVK chief Vijay tries to enter politics, he suddenly shows concern for Muslim voters,” Razvi stated, calling it political opportunism.
Political Fallout
BJP leader K. Annamalai joined the criticism, questioning Vijay’s public image: “You can’t cleanse your past just by wearing a skullcap for a day and hosting an Iftar.”
With growing backlash, this incident poses a potential setback to TVK chief Vijay’s political ambitions, especially as he attempts to gain trust among Tamil Nadu’s diverse voter bas
