Note - the entire premise of the show is about a girl who was kidnapped (along with several other young women) and forced into a doomsday/apocalyptic cult and made to live underground for 15 years, and is now trying to make it in the normal world again and overcome her trauma. It attempts to be “topical” about social issues (with varying levels of success and sensitivity), and controversial subjects that are frequently discussed include racism (towards Native Americans, Asians, Latinas, and black people - p much the whole spectrum) and homophobia.
