Tutorial Review: “HOW TO EDIT ZOOM VIDEO” The title conveys the most important lesson in this five-minute tutorial by Meredith Marsh (@vidpromom): You can—and probably should—edit zoom videos. While a great many zoom sessions are not archived, you might hit the record button for a variety of reasons such as creating online lessons, interviewing someone for a documentary, or shooting a scene for a hip fiction movie. In addition to presenting five easy-to-use editing apps that do a good job with zoom video, Ms. Marsh briefly lists two basic cuts that can improve the viewing experience: 1) trimming the beginning and edit of the video; 2) dividing a long video into separate units. Tutorial review: “How to VLOG – Beginners Guide” The word “vlog” was first used in 2002. Referring to personal videos on a wide variety of subjects, this newest of all genres is extremely popular amongst filmmakers partly because it doesn’t require much gear or a big crew. There’s also the ego factor: many of us believe that our take on life is worth sharing. At its simplest, vlogging requires just two steps: set up a camera and talk into it. But creating a vlog that will have wide appeal requires technical knowledge and creativity. Both ingredients are well-covered in this 24-minute tutorial by @JevenDovey. He's popular YouTuber who has produced more than 200 vlog episodes. Topics include gear, storytelling, shooting (with an emphasis on b-rol), editing, and posting. The video deals with big challenges—for example, what it takes to connect with viewers—and small but key realities— for example, when shooting in public authorities may sometimes shut you down. Of particular value is Jeven's discussion of production frequency. He explains why he transitioned from daily vlogging to event vlogging. Tutorial Review: “3 Ways to Shoot B-roll on a Smartphone” Using B-roll is one of the best ways to add interest to any movie. For example, if an on-screen person is telling a story about washing the dog, a shot of the dog covered with lather would be B-roll. @iPhoneographers 12-minute tutorial deepens our understanding of this important aspect of filmmaking by presenting three B-roll styles: 1) journalistic, 2) marketing or corporate; and 3) cinematic (for travelogues, commercials, weddings, etc.) The tutorial not only illustrates each style but goes behind the scenes so that you can learn how the shots were made. An episode in the @learnonlinevideo series, this clear and concise tutorial covers 10 camera moves such as “The Push Forward” and “The Crane Shot.” Examples add clarity along with many simple but not obvious tips, such as using the heel-toe way of walking to achieve a really steady shot. Steve, who appears onscreen to demonstrate the techniques, includes applications, such as using a pullback shot to end a scene.
