I believe that a deep mastery of programming can only be learned by doing. I've found that having a mastery of the skills I teach helps me spot common problems and fundamental misconceptions much easier.

My father was a professor of mathematics and regularly tutored students - I learned how students learn by watching him, and I was able to put myself through college by working as a tutor. Now is really the first time I can combine my tutoring skills with a strong understanding of programming.

TS: What's your favorite programming language?

BB: My favorite programming language is Lisp - because it has a deep simplicity coupled with an incredible amount of power. I enjoy programming because I like creating and I like solving puzzles - programming is a wonderful way to combine the two.

TS: How does one "think like a programmer"?

BB: You think like a programmer by learning to think slowly and methodically - learning to break problems down, again and again until you reach the simplest problem you know how to solve, and then combining those solutions into greater solutions until your original problem is solved.

TS: Lastly... got any cool tutoring stories for us?

BB: My last student was one credit away from his 4-year degree and needed that degree to stay in the country. I like to think that by working together I was able to help him stay in America, and that probably changed the course of his life.

TS: What's your story as a tutor?

MA: I started tutoring when I was in high school, helping out my Calculus BC teachers with their AP study sessions. When a student came to me confused about a particular topic and I was able to explain it to them, it was the greatest feeling, and I really enjoyed myself. That, plus the fact that the Calculus teachers gave all the tutors In n' Out before tutoring helped, too! Actually, those tutoring sessions were the impetus in my pursuing teaching as a career.

TS: What's it like to be a tutor on Tutorspree?

MA: It's great. I'm actually with another tutoring company, and they don't pay as much as Tutorspree. TS: What are some challenges that you faced when you first started tutoring?

MA: The biggest challenge when I first started tutoring back in high school was that math always came easy for me, and I wasn't quite used to seeing math through someone else's eyes. Initially it was hard for me to relate, but now that I've been teaching for 10 years, I've seen students from every part of the mathematical spectrum. I feel like I can now adjust my explanations to fit anyone.

TS: How did you get started tutoring?

MS: I found courses [via] Internet for tutor’s volunteers in Learning Leaders Inc. After I completed these courses, Learning Leaders sent me to Manhattan Comprehensive Night and Day High school. I helped students to understand biology concepts and helped them with different biology topics, such as: cell structure and function, evolutional concepts, and developmental concepts. Also, I helped in the classroom, answered student’s questions, helped them to do laboratory reports, and I helped them to be prepared for the test.

TS: Why do you like tutoring?

MS: I like to see students' progress. I like to help students understand concepts (in math, English and biology) better than they did before.

TS: Could you give us some quick tutoring tips?

MS: I developed a good atmosphere/ environment with my students. I helped to solve my student’s difficulties with math, English and biology topics. I constructed sets of exercises for the students to help them with their difficulties. I listened carefully to the student explanations and responses of material.

TS: What makes the best and worst tutoring experiences?

MS: My worst tutoring experience was when I had to deal with challenging behavior. I managed to tutor in a complicated emotional environment. My best tutoring experience is when students listen to me and have an achievement, good grades.

TS: What are your experiences being a tutor on Tutorspree?

TS: What's your story as a tutor?

WH: "Boring, boring, boring."

I remember that moment so well--the way my teacher’s eyes rolled as she scornfully tossed my very first story back into my hands. I'd spent hours and hours toiling over this tale, struggling to form the letters in my sprawling, babyish handwriting. But in less than ten seconds, Miss B. had reduced it to one big papery pencily lump of worthless boringness. It was the one day in Kindergarten I'll never forget.

Melodrama aside, I think that incident was what sparked my desire to become a tutor years later. My goal has always been to give each of my students two things Miss B. never gave me: constructive criticism and encouragement to improve.

TS: What are some writing and math tutoring tips that are important to know?

WH: For writing: Above all, make it fun! Writing should not be torturous. Pick age-appropriate, genuinely interesting topics, prompts and readings that spark students' imaginations, ignite their passions, or even make them a little bit angry. If a student is so engaged that she forgets to start daydreaming, half of the battle is already won.

For math: Tailor your explanatory style to each student. Skip the "simple shortcuts" until the student has reached a level at which she can truly comprehend them. Oftentimes math geniuses feel compelled to share all their “easy tricks”—back in elementary school I found those methods even more baffling than the original ones! Some students will totally get it; others will just keep nodding and "mhmm"-ing as their brains fry in overload mode. The key is to tell the difference and meet students where they are.

TS: What's it like to be a tutor on Tutorspree?

Back then it was a fun and easy way to make good money, but now, eight years later, tutoring and teaching has become a central component to my personal and professional life.

TS: What are some tutoring tips you'd like to share?

SC: I can't emphasize enough the power and importance of retrieval practice when studying. Many students incorrectly think they're studying effectively when they just read the textbook over and over again. I use a number of techniques to enhance memory in a powerful way through retrieving information and generating content.

TS: What do you like most about tutoring?

SC: I like tutoring for so many reasons! First is just a chance to get to know students, where they're at, what they're working on, what's going on in their lives. Second is that it gives me a chance to continue to expand my teaching experience and to hone my tutoring skills. I love the moments where a student really has a breakthrough, or building them up to working harder and studying more effectively to achieve one of their goals.

TS: What's it like being a tutor on Tutorspree?
