“TK.”

He’s elbow deep in the nasal cannulas and is starting to see double on the clipboard when Tommy comes into the stock room. He gives her his most convincing smile over his shoulder before turning back around.

“We’re at twelve cases of fifty, Cap,” he says, ticking off another box. “I’m moving onto the syringes next.”

“Good.” TK can hear the smile in her voice. “We won’t have to put an order in for a while.”

He clicks his pen. “Yeah. Do you want me to count the gauze next?” He picks one up for good measure, giving it a gentle toss in the air. “Or the puke buckets?”

Tommy laughs, and when he turns around again, her smile falters a little. “I wanted to talk to you for a second.”

“Oh.” TK sets the gauze down along with the clipboard on a small rolling cart. “Sure. What about?”

She takes a deep breath. “Not to be repetitive, but how are you holding up?”

“I’m okay,” he admits on an exhale. “I kind of keep running it over and over in my head, you know?”

“I’m sure.”

“And Carlos, he’s...he’s resting,” TK continues, walking over to a shelf. He’s antsy at best, but he was completely honest when he said earlier that he’s better off at work. “I’m just trying to make sense of it.”
