The boy stumbled into his kitchen. “Moooooooom! I lost a tooth!” he shouted. His mother turned to him and smiled.
“That’s wonderful, Adam! Let’s put it under your pillow for the tooth fairy, okay?” she said. He smiled broadly and ran off to do that.
When he came back to the kitchen, his mother was gone. “Mom?” He walked around the whole house, even going to his older brother’s and parent’s rooms. His mother wasn’t there.
The boy walked outside and all around the house. His mother was still gone. He went back inside and to the kitchen.
“Mommy...?” he asked the empty air. He slumped to the floor and started crying. He stayed there and cried until his father came home.
“Adam, where’s your mother?” his father asked.
Adam looked up. “She disappeared...” he whispered. “Like JJ.”
The father’s face fell. “Adam, go to your room, okay? Go pack up your suitcase. You’re going to go to your grandmother’s for a while. I’ll be after I drop you off to bring the rest of your things.” He ruffled the boy’s hair and sent him off.
The father watched his son walk away before breaking down. “Oh, Lynn... Oh, my darling...”
Present Day
Sage bit his lip nervously. “College, heh? Oh God, help me out...” He set his bag down and pulled out a piece of paper. “So, I need to go to Building H?” He looked up. “Oh, they all look the same!” He bent down and picked his bag up again. He studied the paper and started walking.
“Watch out!” someone shouted at him. He looked up and ran right into someone.
Sage stumbled back and dropped his bag. “Oh, ow... I’m sorry, I’m a little...” He looked up. “Oh.”
“You dropped your bag,” the guy in front of him muttered softly. Sage gingerly took the bag back.
“...Thank you...”
“Um...” the guy stammered. “You’re a new student, aren’t you?”
Sage laughed weakly. “Is it that obvious?”
The guy blushed and laughed nervously. “Kind of, yeah... Uh, I’m Kenneth. Kenneth Ackley. I can...help you find your room and unload... If you want, that is.”
Sage smiled. “Okay. Kenney. Alright.” He stood still for a moment, awkwardly staring at Kenny before gasping. “Oh, shoot!” He dropped his bag again and stuck his hand out. “Sage! I’m Sage Peterson!”
Sage sighed. “Yeah... Well... I moved in with my grandma when I was 4. There was a lot going on and in that she changed my name from Adam to Sage...and you probably didn’t really want to know that, I’m guessing...” He pulled his hand away quickly and picked his bag up. He kept his head low. “I’d like to find my room now, please.”
“Right, of course,” Kenney coughed. “Which building are you in?”
“H...”
“Room?”
“217... Uh, 217C.”
Kenney blinked. “Really?”
Sage looked up. “Is something wrong?”
“No, no. Not at all. Did they give you your roommates?”
Sage shook his head. “No, I wasn’t assigned any roommates yet.”
Sage blushed. “And I-- Oh God, oh God, oh God! God, please don’t tell me that...” Sage bit his lip to stop himself from crying.
“Hey, wait! It’s okay! If you don’t want to have to room with me, I’m sure we can get that changed!” Kenney rushed, his voice rapidly getting higher. He touched Sage’s shoulder and they both froze. They jumped away from each other, both blushing madly.
“I’m sorry,” Sage mumbled.
“No, no, no... I’m sorry,” Kenney mumbled back. He picked Sage’s bag up and sighed. “So, Building H is this way...” He turned around and started walking away. Sage ran to catch up with him.
Sage jumped in step with Kenney. “Thank you for helping me.”
“Of course,” Kenney replied curtly. Sage glanced down at his duffel bag. He went to take it back from Kenny but instead grabbed Kenney’s hand. Kenney jerked the bag away. “What are you doing?!” he snapped.
Sage flinched. “I just wanted t... Could I have my bag back...? Please?”
Kenney’s expression soften. “Right, sorry.” Sage took the bag back and turned away from Kenney. Kenney sighed. “I...” He exhaled and kept walking. “Here. Building H.”
