3. What is the last thing that a fic made you google when you were reading it?

Not quite googling, but I’ve been working my way through Operation VK and to help me keep track of the characters I’ve kept visiting the page of the profile pics for them, by @itsbenedict. It’s a great resource just for rejogging those bits of my memory I need to keep an overall view on everything going on.

4. What is the last thing that a fic made you google when you were writing it?

So, The Ultimatum of Haruhi Suzumiya has been (or at least has felt like) a particularly research-heavy fic. Research for TUoHS tends to take one of the following forms:

Map-making (oh my god: map-making)

Checking up on the canon of Haruhi Suzumiya for details.

Seeing how the Danganronpa games did it when they were at the stage I’m writing.

Finding fiodder for my copyright infringement machines (You know what you did, Konosuke Kamio and Yayoi Mikawa. You know what you did.)

Since I’ve only just started writing the second arc, I’ve just come out of a sporadic but extensive series of analysing the backgrounds of Haruhi Suzumiya media. (One thing I realised recently, when my uni’s anime society started up again after the break, was that I’m now completely primed to hyperfocus on any background art of any anime school ever. :-/ )The most recent source I picked up on was The Reminiscence of Haruhi Suzumiya. It wasn’t quite the best thing for the floors I had to fill in for this arc, but it’s been extremely useful for contextualising all the other info about the school that I have,

With the new arc started, I’ll probably need to get back to researching characters for Yayoi to cosplay. Someone from Tales of Symphonia, maybe? That’ll be my next google.

9. What’s the best insult you’ve read in a fic?

I haven’t really kept track of good insults I’ve seen in fic. My first guess is from somewhere in Pedestal - it’s got some particularly sarcastic moments - and though I couldn’t find any good verbal insults from before the spoilers settle in there is the moment that the main character is kidnapped, tied up, blindfolded and deposited in front of Crasher Wake’s gym, because he’s been putting off going there with increasingly unbelievable excuses.

After all, he only needs his mouth to voice commands to his Pokemon.

10. What’s the best insult you’ve written in a fic?

If I have one, it’s probably going to have been aimed at Dio in Empty Virtue.

I checked out a bunch of places where I thought Dio had been insulted. But it looks like his downfall and embarrassment are always the consequence of his own actions.

(I may have fudged it a bit ;-) )

On my AO3 I've still got Pandora's Box listed as the first part of a trilogy. There were a couple of other prompts from that year's ZEcret Santa that I felt a thematically linked series could be made of, but I never got around to writing them,

When I was writing the exploration for the second arc of TUoHS, I'd gotten halfway through a conversation with Satoru Ishihara (Ultimate Journalist) before realising I'd accidentally written a Free Time scene rather than what I'd meant to. It probably won't end up in the story, but I've kept it so I can do a "Here's what all the characters' Free Time Events could have been" appendix at the end.

32. Out of all your fics, what is your favorite title?

Damn, I love titling titling things. That moment when you're just kinda think about the entire story holistically, and a name for it slots into place like that's what it's always been called. Though really, what I feel that I'm extra skilled at doing is titling chapters, where I get lots of shots at it and can do some sort of scheme for all the chapter titles in a fic.

This question is about fic titles, so... all the titles of my fics have that feeling of being exactly the right title, so I'm gonna say the one that I'm proudest of is the (still currently unpublished) The Ultimatum of Haruhi Suzumiya. I match the Haruhi Suzumiya titling form, hint at the importance I placed on the Ultimate talents when constructing the plot of this fic, and when at some point in the future the actual ultimatum comes into play, I'll get to name that chapter Title Drop - which fits my chapter titling scheme, bounces off the title I gave the entire fic and connects to other features of the plot as well.

Plus, there's the fact that this story is split into a future part and a past part, which lets me subtitle the two halves Side Melancholy and Side Ronpa (Thanks @jelimore for confirming that "Ronpa" means what I need it to in Japanese).

33. What is your favorite line from [TUoHS]?

More for the tale behind it than anything, the line that finishes chapter 22 (the penultimate chapter of the second class trial).

“I announce my intention, the moment the votes from this trial are tallied, to invoke the Turning-In clause.”

Hurt:

I couldn't find one of these until I went all the way back to the start of the arc. Kyon's having a conversation with Yuki Nagato, filling in some of her back-story since the reveals of the previous arc.

Was Nagato suggesting that something untoward could have happened to the Data Overmind, just like [spoiler redacted]? On the face, it sounded absurd. But it wasn’t even like it was the first time this month that my entire conception of how the universe worked had been overturned. “What would happen? If something did hurt – or kill – the Overmind?”

(normal human beings don't get hurt in this fic. They just die)

Blue:

🌈 If at the beginning of your WIP the characters knew about the end, would they kill you to stop you from writing it?

Ding-ding-ding-ding-Bingo! This is the one I really wanted to answer.

So one of the key themes of The Ultimatum of Haruhi Suzumiya is "To what extent is Haruhi Suzumiya to blame for the Mutual Killing Games?" From inside the fic it certainly seems like she is. There's more than enough instances where it looks like Haruhi is outright supporting Ultimate Despair. And even if she doesn't, the rational conclusion for anyone inside the universe is that none of this would have happened without her powers: both in getting the games going and in ensuring the coincidences needed for proper Danganronpa-style murder mysteries. To the characters inside the story, everything bad that happened flows from her.

But we know that's not true. Haruhi Suzumiya does not exist in the world of Danganronpa. The killing games happen regardless.

So to answer this question, let's apply the same analysis to myself. My characters would want to prevent me from writing this fic. Danganronpa will continue to exist anyway.

Hi! Unfortunately I only have the one WIP going, my Haruhi Suzumiya/Danganronpa crossover (I probs should have tagged that when reblogging the ask meme, sorry). Hopefully my answers for that are interesting for you.

🎀 How many named characters are in this WIP? How many do get a POV?

Only one POV, Kyon's.

In the future side of the story: 7 named Haruhi Suzumiya characters + 9 named DR-style OCs + Monokuma + main villain of Danganronpa + 2 other Danganronpa characters.

In the past side... I haven't planned all the details yet, but at the very least: all of the above + main casts of DR1 and SDR2 + I want to do various bits of the DR3 prequel anime better, so I'll need at least some characters from that.

💖 What is your favorite moment in this WIP?

From what's currently written: I think I've used as an answer to an ask meme a while back one of my favourite moments - an excerpt where Koizumi confronts Kyon and threatens him with a knife. It's really important to me that my AU has changed things like that - that in different circumstances Koizumi could view Kyon as an enemy while still being recognisably Koizumi.

I'll also throw in a moment I haven't mentioned before, since I hadn't written it when I answered that previous meme. There's a bit in Arc 3 where something bad happens to the fabric of reality after Haruhi (over)reacts to the motive. I think I handled it well in the text formatting, though I'll have to see how readers find it.

From what isn't yet in words: One moment I'm really looking forward to comes from my system of titling all the chapters using TvTropes pages. So... (Rot13'd, spoilers for the solution of trial 5)
