Me playing the new Mario party last night got me like: 👀👀
Tuesday, 2nd Nov,
I went to studio 7, the photography studio, to experiment with some objects I had brought in. Rope and old, tattered shoes.
I brought in the rope to relate it to tug of war. There’s a clear winner and loser in this game and inspired by the Netflix show ‘Squid Game’ I’m taking it as life or death. To win is to live, lose is to die. Groups of opposites that are similar in this situation.
The rope is loose in the photo on the left showing the life that is slipping away. There’s an old myth that the each life is represented by a string and one it’s cut you pass on. Here the hand is trying to keep its hold on life. The hand is in darkness, they’ve already lost while the other end is in a red light making the darkness much more powerful.
The photo on the right shows two people fighting to win. Using a low shutter speed on the camera allowed me to be able to capture the movement of the hand reaching for it lifeline. All can be lost in a flash the second a weakness is shown.
Discovered a new term called ‘Readymades’ which is where ordinary everyday objects are repositioned as works of art so that it sparks new points of view. I torn up my old runner even more to try and capture the contrast between the new and the old. The old, tattered runner is not meant to show loss though, I want it to represent how it got this way because of all the work and effort put in to achieve your goal. If it were still perfect by the end then did you really achieve.
It shows a progression. The new and the old are bound to each other by the laces tied in the middle Their lifeline. The old cling to the other not wanting to be replaced even though it’s done it’s job. Both are Nike runners which is a popular brand for sports. Nike is also the name of the Greek goddess of victory.
