Hi!  We’re working on editing this book -- the translation is still a bit rough, and Dad wrote the original for a Chinese audience, so we want to add some footnotes for a wider audience.  After we’re done, we’ll put up a PDF, as well as the option to get a print copy.

I hope you'll get out.  Really doesn't sound worth it.  Fighting the burnout to seek something different is very hard, but that one is worth it.

Thanks. It's the kind of job that exerts its own gravitational well: I know plenty of people who've sworn they're going to leave the company but just haven't, for whatever reason. These people aren't being drama queens, as there are aspects of the job that really do suck, but I think there are a lot of times when everyone just thinks, 'heeey maybe this job isn't completely intolerable and other jobs might be just as bad anyway, at least no one is actively abusing me or forcing me to work in a dirty and/or unsafe environment'.

It is a good job if you want an extremely fixed routine and a steady paycheck, but the fixed routine is a bit of a double-edged sword. Some of the long-term employees seem to have something that looks suspiciously like institutional syndrome.

I…emphasize my interest if a) it will make the convo i’m stuck in more enjoyable b) I can stand to learn something, maybe something the speaker didn’t intend to convey. I do this for women too, but it’s usually not women :|

Yeah, I get that. Sometimes the content of the waffle session is pretty interesting, but the speaker's delivery is just poor. Like whenever I ask my dad about electronics stuff, I genuinely care about the subject, but I have to brace for a huge infodump that's like listening to a very enthusiastic screen reader reel off a wikipedia page.

Sometimes you can just ask a person a question and you get their life story.
