The Smell of Fall
Here is my @nntsecretsanta gift for @ttsommam.
I hope you enjoy this fanfic for kiane that I wrote. It moves back and forth between the present and the past so it may be hard to follow, I hope that doesn’t make it too hard to read!
The Smell of Fall was in the air. It smelled of pumpkin and cinnamon. It was early in the morning on Christmas as the young giantess awoke. She stretched in bed and turned to see that she was the only one in the bed this morning. Diane sat up and rubbed her eyes.
“Why does it smell like pumpkin spice?” Diane asked herself as she got out of bed. She walked to the bathroom to take her pills. There sat a small bottle of star-shaped pills that let her remain the size of a human. She took one quickly and drank a swig of water and walked out of the bathroom to notice a note on the door to the hallway.
Diane picked the note off the door and opened it. “Diane, I have some surprises for you! I needed to run out to get something I needed to finish breakfast. Please just go downstairs and sit on the couch. Everything should be ready when I return.”
Diane laughed lightly at the fairy’s note. It was so Harlequin. The Fairy King was always a bit of a dork when it came to things like this. Diane complied to Harlequin’s wishes and sat on the couch. She closed her eyes for a short period of time and a large amount of beautiful smells fill her nose. It was a cacophony of some of her favorite smells from her favorite season, fall.
When Diane finally got her memories back, for what seemed like the third time, she had fallen in love with him all over again. They had to take a long time to work through some of the more difficult situations. The biggest problem they worked through was when they fought over King’s decision to take her memory away from her. While there was a “honeymoon phase” when she just got her memory back, but once they had taken some time the argument arose.
There was a time when Diane ran away because of the fight. She didn’t run to get away from Harlequin. She ran because she didn’t want to argue anymore. If they continued to fight, she was afraid they would split. When King had found her, she was hidden deep in the Fairy King’s Forest in the middle of fall. Her tears had finally dried and his soft voice was something he was longing to hear.
“Diane, I am so sorry…” King’s voice snapped Diane out of her trance. She turned to see King’s smiling face. In the doorway behind her. “You remember that day correct?” Harlequin asked as he walked to sit on the couch next to Diane.
She took his hand and lay her head on his shoulder. “I do. I was so sorry for running off.” Diane said softly. She remembered feeling so stupid thinking that they would fight until they would break up. King obviously wouldn’t let that happen.
“It was my fault from the start. If I hadn’t been so scared of you being upset of me leaving, we would never had been in that dumb situation.” King squeezed Diane’s hand and looked at her leaning on him. He was much less embarrassed from this all, as they had been married for about 2 years now.
As they sat there in silence they both thought back to that day. King had walked into the small clearing in the woods and sat on the pillow next to Diane. They sat in silence for a while just listening to the sounds around them. There were birds, falling leaves, a stream in the distance. King knew that if he had said anything more right away, something could have gone wrong. It was best to keep the silence.
Slowly King had floated close to Diane and she grabbed his pillow. She nearly pulled him into a hug, but paused.
“Is everything okay Diane?” He asked as he looked at her shy eyes. She grabbed her ponytail and hid behind it. She had been wanting to ask for forgiveness, but It was such a scary prospect. There was no reason for him to forgive her for her outburst. It didn’t matter that she knew what he would say.
King spoke to break the peaceful silence they sat on the couch in.  “Would you like breakfast now? I made your favorite.” Diane nodded happily and got up from the couch with a stretch. She thought she started to smell the faint scent of roasted pig entering the room.
“I thought you weren’t the biggest fan of meat?” Diane teased. King had always been a vegetarian, it came with being a fairy. To be so in touch with the forest, it seemed obvious that he would live heavily off the land. However, he had started to open up to cooking meat, to handle Diane’s immense hunger.
“You know I would do anything to make you happy. Plus, I had to taste it beforehand, to make sure it was perfect. It actually tasted pretty good!” King wasn’t lying when he said this. He wouldn’t actively seek out meat to eat, but having it every now and then wouldn’t be too bad. He stood up and walked with Diane to the kitchen and sat down to have a hefty breakfast.
The meal brought the memories of that day back. King had put his hand on Diane’s cheek and put his forehead on hers. They sat there in content silence. Soon they both started laughing through light tears. The laughter grew into a great roar of laughter. When Diane had finally stopped laughing, she had wiped her eyes and saw something that she was not ready to see.
“It really was two years ago, wasn’t it?” Diane asked across the table. King looked up, caught a little off-guard. Once he realized what she was talking about, he nodded lightly.
“Yep,” He responded. “You were so surprised. Your face that day, it was the most beautiful you looked in years.”
He remembered what she looked like. From one knee he looked over the open ring box to see Diane’s shocked face. A single tear fell from her eye before she scooped him up in a big spinning hug. She kissed him heavily on the lips in the spin. She set him down finally and after he gained his balance he asked again.
“So, does that mean yes?” He asked cautiously.
“Of course, it is you dummy!” She hugged him and gave him another kiss and let him put the beautiful diamond ring on her hand.
Back at the table, the meal had been finished and King was slowly cleaning up the dishes. Diane stood behind the floating fairy and held him in a nice hug as he worked. They stayed there long after the dishes were done. The smell of autumn held the two in comfort amidst the cold winter around them.
“So, you set this up to make me remember, didn’t you?” Diane asked finally breaking their stoic scene.
King held up a small white flower that was similar to the one he used to take Diane’s memories the first time around. “I felt that making you remember a good time would be better than taking your most precious memories away.”
“I think that is the greatest gift you could have given me.”
“You are my greatest gift…”
