「Tsunawatari」

Tsunawatari, Hako Yamasaki (1976)
I have not heard Tobimasu [Fly Away], the more famous Hako Yamasaki work – both more famous at the time (it was her popular break-through) and more famous now (thanks to the internet) – but I hear that debut is reasonably similar to Tsunawatari [Tightrope Walking]. The style is supposedly the same, even if the sophomore’s quality isn’t quite on the same level. It’s easy enough to see how Yamasaki’s voice alone, wailingly melancholic, admirably raw and often its own spectacle, can appeal, though it doesn’t particularly grab me.
