Spoilers for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie below:
I see people melting down about the reveal that Peach and Rosalina are sisters, saying that it βcame out of nowhere.β
Except it didnβt. The movie foreshadows that reveal pretty well. First of all, Peach and Rosalina look alike, something Peach notices at the Gateway Galaxy. Them being sisters also explains why Rosalina told the Lumas to go to Peach for help when Peach didnβt know who Rosalina was.
I also like that the reveal happened via the storybook in Rosalinaβs library, so we get to actually see the story that the Lumas skipped over at the beginning of the movie. I think that was a great setup and payoff.
As a bonus, their backstory does contain intrigue that could fuel future plot lines. Such as, why were these girls on this little planet all alone Γ la The Little Prince? Where are their parents? Who are their parents? What was that thing that was after them in the flashback? Is it still out there?
I think the main reasons people are upset with the reveal is that A. It differs from Rosalinaβs backstory in the games, which was very moving and dear to a lot of playersβ hearts; and B. It adds a familial tie between Peach and Rosalina where there wasnβt one before.
But, as long as you realize them being sisters is only canon to these specific movies and not the games, then I think you can come to terms with it.
