Tlh feels so disconnected from the other series. It ignores so many things established already, it's like it's in its own universe. For example:
- We know Cecily's father was an alcoholic and yet none of the adults noticed Matthew's problem.
- Cecily is very active and a fighter but in tlh she's like a stay at home mom and just takes care of Alexander.
- How is it that everyone is so accepting of all the lgbt characters. Like I know shadowhunters don't follow the same social rules as mundanes do but at this point in history being gay is illegal. LIKE YOU COULD GO TO JAIL. And you're telling nobody had a problem. I feel it really undermines Alec's story. He being the first gay consul is a big deal, his fight for himself and his identity is huge and here it's like it's not even a problem for someone being gay. I know history not always improves, so you could say that people got more homophobic with time, but how. How did we go from this generation to the Circle. Like let's pretend Alexander is the Lightwood ancestor, it means Robert is his grandkid, and we know Robert's father was awful. Are you telling me Alexander, Cecily and Gabriel's child, raised a person so badly? Like how? There's no connection.
- Also, how is it so easy for Anna and Ari, and possibly Thomas and Alastair, to adopt a child. Again, it was a huge deal for Alec and Magnus to adopt Max and Rafael, but for the tlh people is this easy?
- Also, we know Alex is the first gay openly gay consul, so should we assume Charles didn't get to be consul? Or he did get to be consul and the historians erased his sexuality?
SECOND TO LAST BULLET IS A MODERATE SPOILER TO THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE NOT FINISHED CHAIN OF THORNS BUT IT DIDNT MAKE SENSE TO ME TO COPY THIS ALL OVER WHEN IT'S AT THE BOTTOM SO I HOPE YOU SEE THIS WARNING OKAY SORRY
I have seen this sentiment a lot and I do agree with it. Alone (entirely detached from the rest of TSC and ignoring the fact that these characters are the children of my beloved TID characters), it's an all right series. But knowing that it is a TSC book, you're right. Ignores so many established things.
I just try to think of some of the more historically-inaccurate items as intentionally inaccurate so that TLH feels more welcoming and a better version of history than we know truly happened. However, that disconnects from TMI, as we know, because of how much prejudice Alec faced being gay. If TLH truly connected to all established events, I don't think Alec would have been so scared and felt so threatened.
(And, no, I don't think Charles ever became Consul but that's another story entirely).
Given that we know TLH familes are the ancestors of the TMI families (or most of them, at least), it just doesn't connect well. Obviously, big things could have happened between TLH and TMI that made the Lightwoods go back to being assholes for a generation (don't get me started on that either because Gideon and Gabriel would be so disappointed in them).
I get not wanting to feel tied to the family tree to create the TLH story, but CC should have stuck to what she had already established in a main series. Side books I think have more leeway of being retconned or adjusted, but not a main series, especially not the one that started it all.
So yeah, I can overlook historical inaccuracy to a pretty far extent, but stay consistent in your storytelling among the 4/5 published main series, at least. You wrote yourself into that corner; figure it out. Sigh.
TLH would have made a better series if it had been written as an NA series rather than YA and wasn't confined to a trilogy.
Cecily being reduced to a housewife angers me too much to even address it in this already long post but suffice it to say that I ignore that part of canon because Cecily Herondale-Lightwood is not a fucking housewife ksjflkjs

Ok, but also this is kinda right? Like we malec shippers, has accepted that Alec doesn't wanna be immortal and although he and Rafe are gonna die one day, at least Magnus and Max won't be alone. But it's really annoying that every rule of the TSC world can change when it comes to certain characters (like Tessa being the only warlock without a mark that can have children, or Simon becoming human again) but not for malec. Like, the immortality issue got solved completely for Sizzy, although Simon should've died when he gave up his immortality, but Asmodeus easily made him alive again, when he couldn't do the same thing for Magnus? What was the difference? Simon should've been a corpse too, but it easily got fixed where as it couldn't be fixed for Magnus.
And also Tessa doesn't have a warlock mark making her inhuman (and causing her problem like the others!) and can have children, while warlocks shouldn't be able to do that (the whole reason why Warlocks can't bear children is that they're the offspring of humans and demons who are basically two different species, and therefore it makes them hybrids incapable of bearing children. It's a biology fact! It isn't sth made up, so I don't see how the offspring of a Shadowhunter and a demon who are also from two different species can bear children. When in biology, if you can have a living child, capable of bearing children, with another being, it shows YOU'RE BOTH FROM THE SAME SPECIES!! I know it's fantasy but it's not fair that it applies to all warlocks except one for no obvious reasons!)
So what I'm saying is that, basically malec immortality problem can be solved too, but it seems that it's not going to. Alec wouldn't want to become immortal, because he has a parabatai and they should die together, and Magnus can't become mortal without dying (even though the same problem got solved for Simon) and he WOULDN'T now, anyways, because that would mean Max will have no one for him.
Pufffff this is not me hating on any character or CC, I'm just nagging because I remembered immortality angst again today. My words are true though :(
@cassandraclare cmon, don’t be shy, give the people what they want 😤 (*cough* immortal malec *cough*)
Also, someone sent me a different post from this same account earlier today 👀 anon, are you that same person? Anon, why are you scrolling through an anti cc account sksksk
I lowkey disagree with your points about Tessa, cause her entire existence and the point of her character is to break all the rules of the shadow world. And I feel like it's important is remember that her father isn't just an ordinary demon but a fallen angel. That coupled with her mother's angelic heritage could be why she can have children. We already know that warlocks born to fallen angels show some exceptions - like how Magnus can light up a witchlight while other warlocks can't. As a biology student, I agree with your points about warlocks being a hybrid species ofc. This is just me speculating. Also, I don't think a warlock mark makes someone inhuman :)
And as for Simon and Magnus... afaik, Magnus has lived long beyond a normal human lifespan, which could be why he wouldn't be able to turn mortal without dying. Simon however is only 17, so he'd be fine. I honestly don't know enough about necromancy to know if Magnus could be revived or not :/ cause if his immortality is gone he'd be a 400 year old dead mortal. And just thinking of this is melting my brain sksksksk
Also, just remember that Tessa has it the same, if not worse as Magnus. She's immortal, and she has to live through losing a husband and her children twice. And unlike Magnus, she doesn't have an immortal child to keep her company either. 🤷♀️
can people stop acting like fairstairs HAS to be endgame just because clary has red hair. henry has red hair, there’s no need for matthew to have kids with a redhead. PLUS the generations are so far away that the reason clary has red hair could be due to a more recent ancestor. i’m not saying fairstairs 100% *won’t* be endgame but clary’s hair proves nothing.
Things I like: the complicated relationship between clary and her mother. Jocelyn did a lot of questionable things, things that did come from a good place, but things that ultimately hurt clary
the expression of such a complicated mother-daughter relationship - one where the mother is so protective of her daughter that it ends up being detrimental - is so realistic and important
its similar to Alec and Robert’s relationship: complicated, messy, and it doesn’t necessarily involve a lack of love but rather a lack of understanding; both parents have difficulty seeing and understanding things from their children’s pov, and though that lack of understanding showed up in different ways, the base issue is the same
it’s so important that realistic, complex family relationships are shown in different ways than, “parents are dead child is messed up” and Cassie has done a good job incorporating that into her works
disclaimer:
I’m not condoning either actions undertaken by Jocelyn or Robert. I’m not condoning what Jocelyn did to clary’s memories or Robert’s homophobia, merely acknowledging things I noticed taking place in the book that reflected genuine relationships outside of those books.
all of this is my opinion and things I’ve noticed, if you want to discuss or add feel free, just please be respectful
i’m reading lost book of the white rn and look while i understand that maryse’s relationship was alec was always better than his relationship with robert, i really dislike the way she’s almost being retconned into a nurturing, motherly figure who is willing to take alec’s side always because she....isn’t. she never tells robert that he’s in the wrong for his homophobia and cruelty when alec is a child and later a teenager, is barely tolerant of magnus the original series, and neither alec nor isabelle thought she would take alec’s homosexuality well. i don’t doubt that maryse loves her children, but her relationship with them in canon has always been distant at best - even in trsom the most she did for alec was tell him to ‘be happy’, which, sure, is more than robert did, but is the bare minimum and hardly makes up for her husband telling their gay son to go marry a woman lmao.
idk it’s one thing that canon just Doesn’t acknowledge isabelle and maryse’s inherently fraught dynamic and instead shifts the blame entirely onto robert, but it’s another to pretend that maryse has always been entirely supportive of alec, and that there isn’t at least some tension between them, too. that’s just not how trauma works.

Do you think James and Cordelia relationship will work? I've never liked them, and it seems their relationship is more about lust than anything else, I've never believed the: we've been in love with each other since we were 14, it seems a very shallow relationship, like Lucie and Cordelia's friendship. And in chain of thorns Cordelia was really jealous and obsessed with Grace. I don't know what will happen between them after the honeymoon period they're in ends.
**SPOILER WARNING**
I have two answers for this. The one I think it's actually realistic if we look at it from purely a reader's side, and one that is probably what CC will say happened.
The one I think would be realistic if we took this relationship and looked at is as two people in our world, they are absolutely set up for divorce. They have had nothing but a tumultuous relationship from the start which was only made worse by the triangle with Matthew and the obsession with Grace. Their "reconciliation" was literally just having a lot of sex? Having a very physical-based honeymoon and honeymoon phase? Grounds for divorce later one.
They've never had a good, functional period of time in which they had a healthy relationship with no miscommunication or secrets or lies. How is that supposed to transition into a good long-lasting marriage?
So what I think it realistic (and would actually have my respect) is that they are married for a few years, they have a kid or two, but ultimately they divorce. The Herondale line continues, but their disaster of a relationship does not. I think they'd be perfectly fine co-parents and maintain some level of friendship, but a romantic relationship that is healthy just isn't there.
That is not, however, how I think CC would say it all worked out. I think she'd say they lived happily ever after and had their children and grandchildren and everything was good in the world :-)
Hello dear. I read in your other asks that you don't like Jordelia (I don't like them either). I'd like to hear why? I always like to know other people thoughts.
hi there!
I think they're just not a good match for each other (i'd say toxic, but not sure if that's the right word either).
Cordelia is so obsessed with Grace and blames like 75% of what's wrong in her life on Grace and only ever complains and thinks about Grace and how she had James for so long, etc etc. It's not a great start to your relationship if you're so obsessed and focused on your partner's ex instead of moving on. Nearly everything she does is to get James's attention or because of James. Give the girl her own personality, PLEASE.
As for James, his martyrdom is frustrating and just a more dramatic, less story-driven version of Will. Will had a good reason for being an ass the first half of TID and when that reason was "resolved," he immediately explained himself to everyone and was apologetic about how he treated everyone. Sure, he ends up still being rude to Tessa and Cecily a lot (though we know there are additional reasons for that); but like I said, there are REASONS and we KNOW them and they get RESOLVED.
James's was just frustratingly long and self-important. What reason did Will or Tessa ever give him to be so dishonest and rebellious? What actual reason did he have for not just being straight up honest with his family and friends, who have never given him reason not to be, and it isn't like what happened had a direct impact on them either, so it's not like he was keeping it for their sake. I understand him not wanting Tessa to know about his power because she would feel guilty, but every other "reason" James supposedly had just didn't do it for me.
Then there's just their portrayal as a couple overall. Very physically-focused, not a lot of emphasis on how they ACTUALLY feel about each other beyond immediate lust or attraction. Just because they had crushes on each other for a long time doesn't automatically make them a good couple.
Plus, I despise love triangles. DESPISE. The whole James-Cordelia-Matthew thing was sooo boring and took up way too much of a series that had so many more interesting storylines and characters. Using his best friend to get back at him for Grace (and conversely, Matthew taking a very emotionally-vulnerable Cordelia to Paris) was just not great grounds for a healthy marriage, if you ask me.
i kinda hate how helen and aline are lumped together EVERYWHERE. like yes they are cuties and married but i want to see posts about helen, and separate posts about aline. there’s no reason they should be together in every single post. they are each their own woman and deserve enough respect to not be defined by their spouse.
