Updated modern verse thanks to a plot with @truthshaper that we just came up with in skype.
Meredith was five years old when a serial killer manipulated and coerced her sister into aiding him kill their parents, and eventually made Amelia take her own life while Meredith managed to hide. The Stannards’ neighbour, Wentworth Kell, a police officer, heard a disturbance and entered their home, apprehending the killer and saving Meredith. With nowhere else to go beyond the fostering system, Wentworth decided to adopt her as she had taken to him after he saved her life. The Stannard family killer was sentenced to life in prison.
Growing up, she abided by the law and Wentworth’s guidance and did relatively well in high school and college. After graduating, she decided to enlist in the military, serving a single tour of duty before returning home permanently on discharge. It was during this time that Wentworth’s health was in decline and she took care of him as his Alzheimer’s worsened -- while taking on a job as a prison guard for Kirkwall Penitentiary. When he passed, she focused immensely on her career, quickly ascending to Prison Warden of The Gallows (a nickname given to the prison when in its prime, utilized hangings as its main method of capital punishment.)
Coming into power, it was just after her thirtieth birthday that the man who killed her family was released, serving all twenty five years for his crime, and nothing more after coming up with a deal while behind bars to spare his life. In a relentless rage, Meredith made it a point that she favoured capital punishment and was severely inclined to enforce it when possible, and quickly if prisoners were assigned to death row. She is considered stone cold and unforgiving towards those that commit serious crimes -- and even to an extent of some of the lesser ones as well.
(for our plot specifically) - During her stressful time as Prison Warden, Meredith becomes involved with a drug said to enhance strength and state of mind. Hailing initially from Bartrand, Meredith becomes addicted, leading to a paranoid and aggressive state of mind the longer her usage continues for the course of six to seven years. When her stash suddenly turns up missing, it incites a rampage of tearing through every prisoner’s cell, accusing one of them for taking it, and killing many in the process of her search. It’s only when Cullen, her top Guard intervenes that she is stopped -- only briefly before the withdrawal takes her life in a quickly brought on, but slow to die manner of a seizure, paralysis, and then death.
There is a great conspiracy as to the source of such a drug as sources later found out while the Slaughter of Kirkwall Penitentiary is investigated by both government agencies and The Seekers, searching for answers. Hawke, a local troublemaker with the law is pursued as someone thought to have answers regarding the case and the drug’s origins.
