I'm reading the book for Trust Doesn't Rust and it's just killing me that KARR often responds to commands with "As you wish." Although I really doubt it's referencing The Princess Bride, the meaning kind of does apply. These two criminals are KARR's anchor, his only window into this new confusing world, and if he didn't care about them in his own way, he wouldn't be listening to them and trusting them to guide him. It's just really tragic that that trust is vastly misplaced and he's getting verbally abused all the time and treated only as a means to an end.
The funny thing is that Tony is exactly like KARR is described by Devon, survival above all else and self-serving, yet Tony comes off as way, way worse. KARR himself is not the danger, but rather the bad influence that these people are exerting on him. If circumstances had been different, he could have been saved. I just wish someone had acknowledged this.
I had an idea, here goes nothin
is this not the plot of trust doesnt rust

The problem with Karr
So maybe you know, maybe you donât know, but Iâm not exactly a Karr sympathizer. Heâs a great character and wonderful antagonist, donât get me wrong, and I enjoy reading fics/seeing art where he gets redeemed, but in the episode âTrust Doesnât Rustâ, I donât fault Devon or Micheal for making the decision to kill Karr. I want to explain why I feel this way and itâs totally okay if you disagree!
Itâs got everything to do with ethics. But not just the ethics of whether itâs wrong or right to take a life in the name of the greater good- but more so the ability of humans to effectively program ethics into a computer.Â
Trigger Warning for ethical dilemmas with no right answer and serious angst beneath the cut. (oh and itâs long! thereâs a tl;dr at the bottom)
Trust Doesnât Rust deleted scenes and details (part 2)
These deleted scenes deserve their own post.
After KARR turbo boosts out of the warehouse, he turns around to face KITT. In the episode, itâs for no apparent reason, and he doesnât say anything before KITT speaks up. However, the original script shows that KARR turned around just to talk to him (KITT rewatches this memory in the very last scene).
KARR: âThe woman spoke of you, Kitt. It is interesting to meet you.â KITT: âIt is interesting to meet you, Karr. Until now, I thought I was one of a kind.â KARR: âTo be one of a kind is very special... But to be two of a kind is special also.â KITT: âYes. Perhaps even more special, Karr. Perhaps even more.â âTony (who isnât driving anyway) points on the dashboard.â Tony: âKarr! Forget the family reunion. Get out of here!â
Tonyâs âfamily reunionâ quote is in the episode, but doesnât make as much sense without the context of the AIsâ conversation. Instead, he says it after KARR tells KITT that people getting hurt isnât his concern. In the script, however, KARR tries to negotiate with them.
KITT: âKarr, please desist from your actions. Many people may be hurt.â KARR: âThat is no concern of mine. If I desist what will become of me?â KITT: âYou will be deactivated, of course.â KARR: âThen this conversation is nonproductive.â
KARR obviously knows they had the laser, so why would he risk his life to turn around for no reason? Heâs willing to surrender. Heâd obey them if they wouldnât hurt him. But what answer does he get? Theyâll deactivate him anyway.
The episodeâs next scene is confusing too. Tony looks back angrily and asks what KARRâs doing. KARR says, âI must eliminate excess weight,â and then ejects him. Whatâs Tony talking about? Why would KARR desert his only ally? KITT turbo boosts over the same barricade with the weight of two people. The scene is more logical with the missing details:
âA light on the dash goes on reading, "load jettison." Tony turns and is astonished to see that the trunk is opened and the jewels are spilling out the back.â Tony: âWh-what are you doing?â KARR: âI must eliminate excess weight in order to jump over that barricade.â Tony: âOh, no youâre not... not with me in here!â KARR: âVery well.â
Well, Tony asked for it.
Itâs a shame these scenes were changed. I donât know if it was all cut for time or just because KARR didnât seem villainous enough. Personally, I consider the full scenes canon, it gives the episode more logic and heart.
