You’re out of college and excited to start on your own. You find a job. You buy clothes fit for office. You find a place to live. For all that and more, you can’t imagine how you’ll pay for everything. First job. First paycheck. First problem. Perhaps, you may have even uttered something similar to this, “Nobody told me it was going to be like this!” Yes, kid. Welcome to the real world.

What is personal finance? Personal finance is every aspect of your life that deals with money – everything from buying that frappe in Starbucks, to finding an affordable apartment, to setting aside money for your savings account. It is what you do with your money.

Money may not be of essence to you right now because you’re just a young adult busy building a career, but IT is a basic necessity for survival. Money is not the most important thing in the world but it affects every important thing in the world. Your finances affect your relationships, your lifestyle, and most likely, your perception of yourself.

At first, personal finance sounds boring and even difficult to understand. And it’s not that we can’t learn about it, it’s because we don’t learn enough about it. I have noted three (3) reasons why we don’t learn about it:

1. No one told us that personal finance is important

Oftentimes, our parents don’t know its importance. Some are even secretive about it.  How can they teach what they don’t know?

Personal finance in school, however, is plain math. Money and financial planning are not even part of the curriculum. As an Accounting student, I have been exposed to financial jargon but grades were my focus back then. Everything is taught in abstract, in theory.   We were taught about the technicals of starting a corporation but not how find a broker, buy shares, and eventually become a shareholder.

2. We think that it is only for people who have a lot of money

Financial planning? Investment? Bonds? Annuities? Savings? Money? What money? 

3. It’s complicated and intimidating

Some would rather go about tackling the finer aspects of finding out the latest gadget in the market, travelling, and dining than deal with stocks, taxes, inflation, and interest rates. How many times have you picked up the business section of the newspaper and actually read it? Or shall I say, how many times have you picked up the business section?

If these reasons sound familiar, it’s time to pause and think about your attitude towards money. How you handle your finances affects your future. Left unattended, you might financially survive, but you surely won’t prosper.

Start young – or as young as you can. That means start now. Let time work for you, not against you. Educate yourself. Don’t be that someone who says, “Oh how I wish I started ten years ago. Look where I would be today.”
