I'm work in a self-contained classroom, so I stay with the kids all day and then go with them to specials. I only just started working in special education, but I love it so much. I also have had things thrown at me, been bitten etc.. But when they say name and come up to hug me.. It just makes everything worth it.
It really does. I had one student who wouldn’t let anyone even touch his hand when I first met him. After two years with us, he was giving people hugs and saying “I love you” to us. I just love them all to pieces!

Sorry for being nosy omg.. But I was looking through your FAQ and saw that you work with special needs kids. So do I.. I was wondering if you work with autistic kids or just a wide range of kids with disabilities? I'm in the spice program, and I work with kids who have severe autism. It's probably the most rewarding job I've ever had. Ah sorry to be a bother I was just curious and excited to see somebody who works in special education.

Two of the children I worked with this year were autistic, one more severe than the other. The other children I worked with all had other disabilities, some behavioral. I don’t know how it works where you are but here we’re trying inclusion classrooms which is placing special needs children in regular education classroom and seeing how well they can function. The school I work in also has a self-contained classroom in which every student has special needs and has to have three teachers at all times. My job requires me to move around to different classrooms and assist with the students who need one-on-one attention. This year I moved around to three different classrooms from anywhere between 40 minutes to 2 hours to help and I loved it.
It takes a lot of patience. I’ve been bitten, kicked, scratched, slapped, had shoes and chairs thrown at me, but I love what I do because at the end of the day I’m helping a child. I’m helping a parent who may not know what else to do. I’ve had parents breakdown in tears because they’re so thankful and can see a difference in their children and it’s so rewarding.
