This Alpine landscape by John Singer Sargent features an angler prowling the bank of a wild stream, intently watching the water for his next catch. Sargent’s subject is a model of rugged masculinity, and this depiction of leisurely athleticism, though set in the Austrian Tyrol, would have appealed to many Americans of the period for whom sporting activities provided a welcome break from the workweek.

Coldwater Creek - March 2010 Coldwater Creek is a stocked trout stream in northeastern Iowa. What makes it such a good place for trout is the fact that the stream comes from a huge spring that flows up from an underground cavern. After emerging, the stream flows through this large rock layer before going out onto a level plain where it meanders for several miles before joining the Upper Iowa River. MWM

Coldwater Creek - March 2010 Coldwater Creek was one of my favorite places to hike when I was at Cresco, Iowa. When my grandson, Nathan, came to visit I took him to see Coldwater Creek. In 2010, the bridge across the creek was still there, but we went across on the stepping stones anyway. The first image is of the old bridge that used to cross the creek before being taken away in a flood. The second image is of my grandson Nathan standing on one of the stepping stones. MWM
